Safety Neutral Switch???? - 07/03/10 01:08 AM

70 RR 727 My back up lites don't work but I can jump the plug at the tranny and they work. Does this make my switch bad? It is a new one but I guess it could be. What do you think? Thanks Ronnie

Are you sure it's going all the way into REVERSE enough to turn on the lights? Edited because of brain burp.I was refering to it being out of adjustment.

It's more likely that the shifter is out of adjustment, but the switch could also be bad.

I thought that if it was set where it would start in park it was close. I moved it just a little to get it to start. All new bushings on the linkages. So what do I need to do? Do I need to mess with it again? Ronnie

Could be the rooster comb in the trans(it's plastic), they can fail. Test your switch with a multimeter in reverse.

I was just going to say- if you think it's the switch pull it out and stick a volt meter on it and see what it does. But that last link seems to say how to check it anyway. The last one I had go bad the spring was no good in it. Or just buy a new one and try changing it. They don't cost much and any parts store should have it.

I think I'm just going to trade it for another new one and try that. I've got several different new switches that have been bad. You know they are made in China are Mexico now. Ronnie

Some of the replacement switches now available are reportedly too long and don't allow the center plunger to extend far enough to trigger the BU lights.

How would I know if it was too long are not? Ronnie

If it works on the bench but not in the transmission the pin is too long. Some people claim to have used washers to space the switch out of the case but with the cupped gasket......?

A lot of the connectors plactic is really hard now and do not make good connection on the trans switch, or fall off completely.

It is plugging on the switch good and tight. I took a wire and jumped the 2 outside prongs and the lites came on. I'll just have to go to checking stuff when I go back to the shop. Ronnie

I haven't gotten a new one that wasn't bad yet. They are pretty simple how they work. But I didn't know they aren't even making them right. That sucks.
