Drip rail chrome trim 73 satellite - 06/19/10 09:24 PM

What's the safe way to remove the chrome trim that's on the drip rail on my 73 Satellite??? Not the piece that holds the top window seal/weatherstrip it's actually on the edge of the drip rail.

I got this tip here, use the round end of an old bottle opener. You just gently pry from the bottom up, and work it off. Sometimes I put thin cardboard under the tool, just to protect the trim, but usually it comes off pretty easily.

If you use the bottle opener trick, place a popsicle stick/thin piece of rubber/etc. between the tool and the face of the drip rail trim before prying.
Otherwise, after buffing, you will see a series of small, shallow dents the bottle opener put in the trim.

If you are removing the roof rail trim (channel with the weatherstripping) also, remove it first then use a thin, wide piece of hardwood (1/4" thick x 2 or 3" wide oak works well) to gently tap the bottom edge of the drip rail trim from inside the car. An assistant is helpful in holding the piece of wood against the bottom edge of the trim (and to catch the piece when it does come off) while you tap. Patience is key regardless of method used if you intend on reusing the trim. good luck

Thank you the bottle opener trick worked great. I used a paint stir stick to keep a little tension on the trim while I worked it off. Thank you
