Challenger Conv wheel house modifications---- - 06/05/10 08:40 PM

Does anyone have or know of a template for modifying the standard wheel house for use on ebody convertibles? From looking at it, it appears as though the tops are just cut off and covered over with a simple sheet metal cap. Both my inner and outer wheel houses need replacement so any tips or tricks from people who have done this job would be appreciated and nice to learn.

The tops are just cut & capped, nothing special about the wheel house.. I split my original wheel house & used it as a template...

Thats what I did also. I carefully removed the outer wheelwells, and layed them over the new ones and used them for templates to cut the new peices. For the inners, its your call. I would probably just repair the bad areas,as needed, verses the labor thats involved to remove the inner well.

I guess my major concern was the fact that the bottoms are pretty rusted out and I did not want to get the cut line marked in the wrong place.

On mine I was able to use the hole in the flanged edge that attaches the outer wheelwell to the inner well to align it to cut it. It's better to cut it and leave about an inch extra material on the new peice. I dryfitted the rear quarter panel, and the trunk extension then I kept trimming the outer wheelwell until I was happy with the fit. It's a lot easier to leave extra material on the new part and keep trimming it until you are satisfied, then it is to cut too much off,and try to put it back on.

Good point. I will try this technique when putting my wheelhouses back in. Makes sense to leave a little room to avoid error. Trim a little at a time till I am happy with the complete fitment.

When you dry fit the rear quarterpanel, and trunk extension, also bolt the rear valance in place too. This will help to insure that the trunk extension is fitted in the proper location. You will be welding your wheel house to the extension, and proper alignment is critical to the rear valance fitting to the quarterpanel correctly. You don't want to be having to take a cuttoff wheel to your freshly painted car, when you try to bolt the rear valance up,and it dosen't fit. This is an area that requires a lot of massaging on E bodys to insure correct fittment/appearance. It is also the most obvious area that will show if it isn't correct.
