Trans Cooler Plumbing Help

Trans Cooler Plumbing Help - 05/19/10 12:35 AM

I bought a B&M cooler with 3/8" barbed inlet and outlet:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-70268/

I want to hook it up so that is goes trans>stock hard lines>radiator cooler>hose>B&M cooler>hose>stock hard lines>trans.

Where I'm having trouble is going out from the radiator to the cooler and back from the cooler to the stock hard lines.

Of course the fittings that come in the kit are all wrong. So far in my attempt to get the correct fittings, I've gone to two Napas, Fastenal, Lowes, Home Depot, two local speed shops, and a place that does nothing but plumbing for off-roaders.

I'm also willing to return the cooler and get one with different fittings and start all over if that will make it easier.

Should I order one with -6 AN inlets and outlets? Will that make it easier to adapt to my radiator output and/or stock hard lines?

I've come up with a solution that involves bypassing the radiator cooler but the directions say to go trans>radiator cooler>B&M cooler>trans.

Thanks for any advice and/or parts/parts numbers you can give me for suggestions.

Street/strip car: '67 Satellite with 440/727/3.91 gears, 9.5" Dynamic Converter.

It's a combo that about a million other people have so I figure there has to be someone running the stock hard lines to the radiator cooler to the after market cooler and back through the hard lines to the trans or even bypassing the radiator cooler but still using the stock lines to get up to the after market cooler and back.

The car is in SoCal where it never gets much colder than 50 degrees ever if that makes a difference on whether or not to bypass the radiator cooler.

If you want to plumb it with hard line, I would go with one that just has NPT threaded outlets on it instead of hose barbs, then you can use some NPT - inverted flare fitting and run hard line too it, or NPT - AN if you wanted to go braided.

What I would really like to do is run some socketless hose from the radiator cooler to the aftermarket cooler and back from the aftermarket cooler to the factory hard line.

Re: Trans Cooler Plumbing Help - 05/19/10 02:25 AM

A cooler with NPT threads then, and then just AN to NPT fittings and screw on your hose fittings..

Are you going to join up to the old hard lines, or go right to the trans with the hose? You can go hard line to AN too, or just get fittings to go directly into the trans too I suppose (not sure the size off hand)

I like using as much hard line as I can mostly, since it is less likely to have an issue then hose.. (especially on a street car)

What is the weight-rating on the cooler? ... IF the cooler is not tooooo large I would just BYpass the rad completely.

13,000 BTU...don't see a GVW rating like they used too

BTU ? ...

Is THAT how they rate coolers in OZ ... or is it in YOUR fair-state of CA ?

Yes, I want to join up to the old hard lines.

Re: Trans Cooler Plumbing Help - 05/19/10 02:53 AM

Well...you can either use an AN-hardline adapter, tube nuts and sleeves with a 37° flare to an AN fitting (if you plan to use hose..) or just hardline union if you go with hardline (or just a new longer piece of line that reaches..)

Re: Trans Cooler Plumbing Help - 05/19/10 05:43 AM

I have an external cooler in the Charger 727 because the cheapie Griffin radiator didnt have a cooler in it. I remember reading that the fluid should go through the radiator as well. Mine doesn't and the trans is fine. I have wondered the reasoning for the double pass theory. The radiator running at 200 degrees doesn't seem like it would help as much as a good external cooler.

I have my stacked plate B & M cooler bypassing the radiator.

I have plumbed it using hard line & joined it to the factory hard lines....fabbed up some brackets & mounted it in the "Hemi" location

Send that cooler back and get the one with the 3/8 pipe fittings, order 2 of the 3/8 pipe to #6 flare straight fittings and then contact Orme Brothers racing @ Ormebrothers.com and order 2 of the hardline adaptor fittings that connect transmission lines to braided hose lines. These are the correct fittings to do what you need to do without cutting the hard lines. Mount the cooler where you want, I recommend the drivers side of the radiator and order your braided hose and fittings to complete the job. I don't recommend running the lines thru the factory cooler as the heat of SoCal will warm up the fluid enough for normal operation. PM me if you need more info as I'm in the Riverside area and go to Oceanside quite a bit to visit family.

Re: Trans Cooler Plumbing Help - 05/25/10 11:56 PM

...any trans guys i talk to say the trans should run 170 - 190.
..you will have a hard time getting it that warm without passing it through the rad...even in warm weather.
