welp, if that is the case, what does a good performance shop charge to rebuild a 727? $1000? $1500? Ugh, if its not one thing its another.
(not concluding that is it, just speculating in order to prep the wife)

around $900.00 is about right for a rebuild.

Do you have the trans kickdown linkage hooked up and if so is it adjusted correctly? This can make a big difference. Make sure the kickdown lever moves freely. They like to get stuck and not move. Then the trans will shift funny.

Man the thing sounds like a ski-boat.
Are you sure it was in 1st gear?
Sounds like it was just up flashed on the converter in high gear. The motor never really rev's up...

sounds like it was slipping to me..
also sounds like the TC is to high on stall also
why so much?
I would use a tight 3000 stall from turbo action

question-
ON a 727 rebuild- is it simple enough a regular(local) transmission shop can rebuild it or would you take it to a performance transmission specialist?

Maybe a band adjustment would help before springing for a rebuild?

Silly question, did you get all new fluid in when you changed the converter? I had some cheap old fluid in mine for awhile and it had similar symptoms as yours. I put in new quality DexronIII and it shifted perfect.

Sure sounds like it is slipping. If the car has been doing that since you got it, it could be that the kickdown linkage has always been out of adjustment and needs adjusting. I would start with that. You could be putting "just" enough pressure into it to make it seem kinda normal. At WOT make sure the lever on the trans is all the way back. If that seems to improve it some, next I would call a reputable torque converter company and give them your cam specs and see what they recommend for a torque converter. 3000 seems high to me. If your running a mild cam I would think a stock stall or maybe 2200-2400 would be sufficient. There are a multitude of factors, car weight, cam (power band), rear gears, and of course usage. IF it is going to be mostly a street car then in my opinion 3000 is to high. In 1973 Chrysler pushed the limits, much to everyone's suprise, when they put a higher stall converter in production vehicles which was still less than 3000. A given torque converter may stall at 2,500 rpm behind a small block with 300 lb-ft of torque, but provide 3,000 rpm before reaching stall speed behind a 440 which belts out 450 lb-ft of torque at stall rpm. It varies.

I got the 3000 stall part..but is it tight,med,loose???
does the engine make enuff torque for that 3000 rpm stall?
stock high stall 2200-2400 should be good for a mild cam,IMO

Well its the tranny. Just had the tranny shop take it for a test drive and when he floored it, it didn't accelerate and had to back out of it to get it to go. Thanks for the input, ill update the outcome.

make sure they flush that verter or replace it with another along with the rebuild
they should flush the lines and cooler as well
