09 Town & Country torque spec - 05/02/10 11:34 AM
Theres a 1 1/4" nut on the end of the front axle. Conventional vehicle would have a cap over nut and a cotter pin to lock it. You would snug nut but not too tight against bearing. Then lock it with cap/cotter pin.
This FWD has interference fit type nut, no cotter pin set up. Is it to be tightened to the maximumum? Thats what I did and it seems ok but now Im wondering if too tight could be wrong.
Thanks for reply.

the axle nut should have provisions for a cotterkey, as this secures the axle to the wheel hub.[at least the ones to 06, so i would guess the 09 is similar]. the torque is 244nm.[180 ft.lbs] with the brakes applied for this nut, as per the fsm.[in other words, real tight !] hope this helps.

Thanks. It doesnt have cotter pin set-up. Big nut has divots punched into it, that I think is intended to lock itself. Brakes are way different from 05 that I had as well. I was wondering if its ok to re-use this nut, and how tight...
"Real tight" was really what I needed to know.
Thanks.

NOTE: Always install a new hub nut. The original hub nut is one-time use only and should be discarded when removed.
11. Install hub nut (1) on end of halfshaft stub shaft (2). With aid of a helper applying brakes to keep front hub from turning, tighten hub nut to 160 N·m (118 ft. lbs.).

I thought so. It was easier going back on than coming off although there was some rust in the mix also. How about some medium loctite til I get a new nut?
