727 trans question - any ideas?

727 trans question - any ideas? - 04/21/10 02:17 AM

I bought the 32 y.o. daughter a '79 Ramcharger with the 360/727 combo. Ran fine and she needed something I thought would be bulletprof. She has driven it for about 6 month with no major problems. The other day she backed out of her parking space and when she put it into drive, nothing happened. The motor revs up and there is no shudder, or attempt for the Ram to move. It backs up just fine. In any postion of drive it is like it's in neutral. There is plenty of trans fluid and it's clear and bright red. Anybody have any ideas what may be the problem? Or should I just tow it over to the tranny shop? I'm hoping there is something simple I may be able to fix that is not too complicated.
I admit I don't know transmissions.

Tow it home/drop the pan and see what you see for abnormal & holler back. EDIT might have to drop the VB

Yeah, I was afraid of that. I'm tied up at work all week and out of town this weekend so it will have to wait if it isn't something simple.
Thanks for the reply.

Sounds like to me it is a failed rear clutch pack.

If the shop does it yes as they'll want to rebuild the whole shebang w the trans having to come out/up on the bench

Even at a " honest " trans shop, it will not be cheap. Once I touch your trans, I own it. Anything that goes wrong with it, you are going to be looking at me to repair it under warranty. I accept that and will do a complete rebuild, and give you a very good warranty. You will be happy with my work, and if not, I will stand behind it and make you happy. The " cheap " shops will tell you that you have a different problem and it will cost you to fix it. I pay my employees, insurance, taxes, rent, parts, and if anything is left over, myself. I am not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I don't know how many transmissions you have done .. but I have done PLENTY ... where a person is low on $$$$ and just needs that one specific item fixed.

This one here ... maybe a blown-out rubber seal or maybe a broken sealing ring.

With basic gaskets and a seal or ring ... a 50$ bill.

I agree, especially if you explain it to the customer. If need be, just write a note on the bill that all you did was replace a seal on an old tranny that might need more work... Kim
