Anyone ever run headers and exhaust pipes without mufflers?

Yeah, but not for long. Way too noisy for me,the cops and the neighbors.

What you want are exhaust cutouts. Look at:

I did, I love it.....the longer the pipes, the better it sounds - less clunkerlike. I particularly hate the sound of them dumping underneath - with tailpipes all the way back it'll have a tighter sound.
I always laugh inside when I hear people tell me how loud their ride is with "Flowmasters"....

Maybe its just me getting old but I think loud pipes are for a$$h0les! The whole "loud pipes save lives" thing is just someone's justification for being a public nuisance.

On a race car they make sense ... you've squeeezed every bit of power out of everywhere else and the last place id to free up exhaust flow. In any other application it makes no sense ... you need more power, find it elsewhere because unless its a racecar, you haven't built it to its limit!

My 67 dart has a unique system... I took a pair of AFU rusty flowmasters and removed the internal baffles, then welded them into the car with full tailpipes. The "mufflers" are now more like resonators. The car sounds decent to me.

I had headers and 2.5 pipes straight back no muffs on the mud truck

didnt sound to bad at idle and loud as hell on wot blast thru the mud

I mean REAL LOUD!

and when it was "scratchinfotraction" and moveing at a walking pace it was blistering loud at the bumper turning 6200 rpms and the 17/40s would be turning at around 80 mph on the low side in 4' of mud

I wont do it that way again,I will just stick headers thru the hood with some flappers on the colletors

plez run muffs on the street

The pipes resonate the exhaust pulses, and with out mufflers, actually make it LOUDER.

Open headers are quiter than headers and pipes.

Cutouts are a good way to go, and are inexpensive.

In all honesty, I see less than .1 improvement running open vs through my 3" flowmasters with 2.5" tailpipes.

If you don't want mufflers, but need to acheive some back pressure in the system, opt for some Powerstick chambered tubes, closest thing to straight pipe, Summit has a selection of chambered tube pipes in stainless steel also...

You will want something just for noise control. I ran open headers and the cops hassled me over it. At an idle/light throttle I thought it was quite reasonable, I think it was quieter than the average harley. I haven't decided whether I want to install the electric flapper doors or change to a complete 3" exhaust.

Some punk kid in my 'hood used to rip around being a menace in all sorts ov "hot" cars, though typically 5.0L Mustangs. Any time he got a new car he'd have his exhaust guy hack out the mufflers and weld in straight pipe. The cats got tossed as well. So i got to hear quite a few different V8 cars with full exhaust and no mufflers.

I gotta say they still pretty much sounded like [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean]. Its pretty difficult to make a 5.0L sound bad, but he did it. Loud it definitely was, but i didn't like it.

I dont mind loud cars, i own a few, but they gotta sound GOOD. Theres no excuse anymore. There are so many cool mufflers, and a billions different models, many no quieter than open pipes. Hell, the exhaust technology exists to build quiet full race exhaust systems now, manageable noise, no HP loss. But loud is still fun. Our 96GT has a very loud system, and its still lucky to make 225HP i bet... But it sounds SOOOO good... I WISH my Charger sounded so good...

Yep. Headers and straight out the top. Was only supposed to be temporary but sounded so good I left it that way. Only cost me a few bucks to get it inspected every year.

The link in my signature gives an example of the difference between mufflers and headers with dumps. Even though the dumps are right under the front doors, I don't think plumbing out behind the bumper would make a lick of difference. It is loud!
