Yes it's been asked alot before. For breakin, I've used Rotella 10-40. There has been some question about the zinc composition which is needed during break-in. I found some STP red bottle additive which is supposed to have alot of zinc. GM EOS oil supplement is also good but getting hard to find for some. After break-in, it's just your own preference. I like Castorol because it seems to hold good oil pressure compared to others. Bottom line change oil often

I switched to VR1 20/50 racing oil because its easier to get than the Brad Penn I was using. Has more phosphorus & zinc than most. Check out

hmmm lets see. for my engine breakin I used the cheapest oil wallmart had (10w30) along with superweak valvesprings. after cam breakin and a hour to change back to the good springs. twas good to go. and for 'regular' running I use the cheapest oil wallmart had (10w30), changed every 2000miles w/ new filter and again with no problems.

and I know less then pretty much anybody. BUT I do know that I never wiped any cam during breakin. many many years of good service. zinc this and that is all marketing hype. todays oils, even the cheap stuff is vastly superior to anything refined 30+ years ago.

You have been lucky so far. The zinc has been pretty much taken out of the new oils and that makes them bad for the old tech cams. The new roller and overhead cams don't need the zinc but or flat tappet cams do.

is the zinc needed just for break in, or do flat tappet engines continue to need zinc? From what I read, I got the idea that new oil probably still has enough zinc for lubrication once the cam is broken in?

Once the cam is broken in then the normal oil will have enough zinc in it to control excessive wear.

nah... there just my "break-in" valvesprings. makes my life easier.

Use a good quality oil like Castrol or Valvoline and a zinc additive like ZDDP.

Current car oils have around 500-600 PPM zinc. Most say you need 1100 - 1300 with a flat tappet cam. More with high spring pressure. Always.
Cam companies, engine builders and car mags have written about this. Lots of posts about flat cams kinda prove it.
There are lots of solutions to this folks have used. Adding ZDPP or GM EOS to regular car oil is one. Some 20W-50 racing oils have higher zinc (and some dont't I believe). There are speciality classic car oils and 4 stroke motorcycle oils with high zinc.
I choose diesel engine oil. Rotella T in 10W-30 or 15W-30. Its readily available and reasonably priced. It still has 1100-1200 PPM zinc. I add STP for insurance. For break in add EOS, ZDPP or STP.
