Camshaft Selection for Stroked 440 - 03/08/10 11:55 PM

Hello. I own a 1971 Road Runner. I'm looking to pick out a hydraulic roller camshaft.

My drive train specs are as followed:

512
Weight: 3700
Street/Strip Use here in Pennsylvania
Looking to dip into the 11s
I did run a flat tappet with duration a .50" of 241 on the intake, 247 on the exhaust with lift numbers of .545/.545 for intake and exhaust. Lobe seperation of 110. That cam is wiped out. Time to start over.

Dana 60 rear with 3.54 ratio
2200-2500 stall speed
26.6 inch tire in the rear
Running pump gas
10:1 compression
Stock Edelbrock aluminum heads
M1 single plane intake
Doug's 2inch, 3 1/2 inch collector header
870 holley carb
1.5 Roller Rocker

I've looked around at Comp Cams and Hughes Engines. I'm going to call Hughes Engines tomorrow for some advice.

This car will be mostly street driven. I'm more after a strong torque curve than peak horsepower.

Thanks for ideas.

Adam

Hey adam,is this a b or rb block? The reason why I ask is because I am putting together a rb build right now and I am looking for ideas as well. How did it run and sound with the comp. cam? And can you let us know what hughes says?Sorry about all the questions but I am newbe to mopar and I am trying to learn all I can for the build I am doing. The bummer is my machinist just had back surgery at 72 years old and is down for a while and I have known him since I was a kid and he has built many bad boy motors for me.Any way any info or ideas would be great. Thanks

I just finished up a magazine article where I used a Comp XR292HR-10 hyd roller cam in my 505 motor. That was a really nice combination that made good power. It might be a tad big for a street car with full exhaust so if it was me I'd probably drop down to the XR286HR-10.

Give Dwayne a call at Porter Racing Heads and buy whatever he tells you to get. Dwayne will get you squared away with the right setup.

With a Performer RPM intake and a Holley 1000HP carb this motor made 630 hp. That is enough power to put you into the 10's if you can hook it up so one step smaller on the cam should still give you plenty of power.

Rich, if you're looking for info on big block Mopar engines then check out the book I wrote last year. Go to www.amazon.com and search for "Mopar big blocks". You'll find my book plus a few others on the subject.

Thanks andy,I picked up my copy at barnes and noble 2 days ago,(THIS IS A MUST HAVE BOOK),I love it so far,but I am still after more cam info and oiling mods(if required)for a hyd. roller cam in a stroker rb.I have not made it to far into the book yet because we have the wifes relatives visiting so I am sneaking on line right now.

Glad to hear that you're enjoying the book. No oil mods required for a hyd roller cam if you use retro-fit lifters from Comp. You will need some way to control the end thrust on the camshaft though so that means a thrust button and some mods to the timing chain cover. Plenty of pictures in the book to explain it all.

If you're interested in something a little different there is a combo where the 292HR would probably work just fine. I ran the 292HR with 1.60 rocker arms in my 505 with an Edelbrock CH-28 intake manifold and dual 500 cfm Edelbrock carbs. Using two fairly small carbs on the dual plane intake manifold really smoothed out the engine at idle and low speed. It cost a little power on the top end but the bottom end was super nice. I think this combo would make a great street engine. The big Holley on a single plane intake made the most power but it was also fairly lumpy at idle.

I'd call Scott Brown at Competition Components, LLC www.buyracingparts.com Office: 616-499-6223. I'd think with more gear and convert it'd be easier to reach the 11's.

This is a raised block. I have yet to call Hughes Engines. It ran well with the Comp flat-tappet. She shook quite a bit and had a lumpy idle, but it pulled strong in the mid-range on up with just a hair of throttle applied.

I'm torn between running a mechanical or hydraulic roller at this point.

I believe the XR286HR-10 would be a great fit for the street in the hydraulic roller camp.

I'm also taking a look at the XR274R for a street solid roller. I will hardly drive it much and occasionally take the car out once in awhile to hit the drag strip for fun. How is a mechanical roller on the street?

Thanks. Adam

I suggest calling Eric @ Erson and letting him grind you one. I am running a 505 in my otherwise stock '70 Cuda with factory rallye wheels and 3.23 gear. Best time to date is 11:49@ 125mph with horrible 60' time over 2 seconds with no traction whatsoever. I have more compression at almost 12:1 with mildly ported Eddy heads. Cam is a solid roller. I believe the car wil go 10:90 all day long if I could get it to hook. I drive it everywhere with the family on board. Your package with the right hyd. roller will definitely go mid-11's all day long. If you call Hughes IMHO he is knowledgeable, but will tell you he can make you a flat tappet cam yada-yada instead of giving you what you want. Call Eric at Erson Cams in NV...
