include a transgo TF-2 shift kit. I'd have to dig out what was recommended to me for the discs/plates etc

I think ht e999 is the one with 5 clutches already in the front pack and 4 in the rear, if so it is the good one. It should have the low 1st and 2nd gear ratios in it also, if not get a set. The low ratio works great and is the strongest factory set of pinions, 4 planatary gears in a steel cage.

I would build it with a trans go kit, witch one depends on how hard you want it to shift and if you want it to still shift automatically, I personaly prefer the TF-1 kit with the setting set for max firmness.

As for the rest of the trans I like to eliminate the wavy snaprings in the clutch packs, put a spacer in the rear band apply servo to make it solid, put a blocker rod in the middle accumulator to keep it from moveing, make sure you have at least a 3.2 ratio lever up to a 4.2 don't use the 5.0 and filler up with some type-F fluid and it should last a good long time.

start with a 727. easy as that! the 999 is still basically a "904"; these trannys don't get the name "nasty 904" because they are strong trannys!

727 soaks up a lot of HP and weights quite a bit more, one reason we love small blocks is the weight saveings and the 904 is a bonus weight saveings as well as the lower 1st and 2nd gears. To make a 727 as light and get the lower gears for it is going to cost a fortune and it will still take more HP to turn everything

Replace the three piece sheetmetal front band with the early style one piece forged band. That's what my 360 used to tear up.

Thanks for all the good infos Dave, my plan was to swap for the sportsman valve body from SMR transmissions.

Next, how do I deal with the lock-up model? if I change valve body, I suppose it won't lock up anymore....so what about the converter ?

It looks to me like the SMR valve body will work with the lock up since they want to make sure it is matched to the year of the trans, I may be wrong but that is the way it apears on there site.

If the VB has lock up elimintated you will still need a LU converter because the input shaft is different, the lock up will just not lock up.

I would not use a lock-up trans for any performance use.The hollow input shaft is a weak point, and can fail with 250+ HP.

Re: Beef up an A-999 ? - 03/12/10 03:01 AM

I have used them behind 400+ hp strokers with no problems. The one in my car now has had a turn behind the stock 3182bbl, a 402 stroker, a 318mpg motor and now a stout 360 with ported mag headsXE268 cam M1 single plane intake... and it still shifts great and no broken input

The input shaft is hollow but it is bigger diameter so in my opinion it is just as good as the non LU.

Hey Dave !!
what cam would you recommend for me ?
408 in 62 cc RHS heads 10.1:1 cr...2800 stall
would a XE286 be too much.....give me a 9.2 dynamic cr...

Re: Beef up an A-999 ? - 03/13/10 02:14 AM

It depends on what you want from it. Personally I have an XE268 in the 360 right now and I don't like it. If I had more compression and cubes it would probably be just right for me. I had a custom cam cut for my motor similar to yours and it is a 231 @ .050 .514 lift and I am scared I won't like it. I like a smooth idle and lots of TQ and if it won't go past 6K I could care less.

I can not find an XE286 cam so I am thinking you mean XE268.

If that is the cam you are thinking of useing you should be fine at that compression, the magnum head is very detonaation resistant.

Nobody mentioned changing out that large single coil spring in the clutch drum.

This looks good...........

Dave,

I really meant the 286...see summit., but now
I'm leaning more in favor of the XE280 with the RHS heads...
