Broken exhaust stud questions - 02/23/10 10:52 PM

I'm curious as to what studs enter the water jackets of the heads. 68 Charger R/T, 440 original engine. I have two broken studs; Passenger side, third up from the rear and on the Driver's side: furthest aft stud. I was able to drill out the passenger side one, and may have to chase the threads with a tap to get out the remaining bolt shards, but the driver's side aft is not going well. On top of that, my bolt extractor snapped off and now that's preventing me from drilling it out straight. Problems, problems. These were luckily broken before I removed them, so it wasn't my fault. But still, I have to fix them. I'm worried about coolant leaking out of the studs. Does that passenger one enter the water jacket in the head? Does the driver's side one as well? What sealer do I use on the bolts? I heard Great Stuff was the sealer of choice but wanted to ask around. Thanks guys.

Cheers

If you cant work the broken EZ out out of the head, you will need to pull the head and take it to a shop with an EDM machine to burn it out and then repair the damaged thresd.

heat up the broken bolt extractor w the hot wrench then zap it w a shot of oxygen. It'll fly out of there back at you so fast you'll think it was too easy

It sounds like the heads gonna have to come off.

It'll be alot easier to work on getting out the broken extractor with the head off and on a workbench.

IF the guy doing the EDM process KNOWS what they are doing ... there is ZERO damage to the threads.

EDM is the best way to do this. And in case someone else is approaching the same situation ....USE a SQUARE EZ out.

Sears has them.

I know the correct way is to remove the heads. I had the same problem once. I just took the exhaust manifold off and tapped it. I then put high heat epoxy in the hole and screwed a bolt into the manifold. Believe it or not the water leak stopped and i didn't have an exhaust leak. I know it wasn't proper but it worked for me.
