Throwout bearing- 833 - 02/20/10 10:06 PM

Who makes a throwout bearing that will hold up on the street? I got 3 months out of one from Napa- it was the only one I could find local that was made in the USA, it held up fine in normal driving but I got hung up in traffic yesterday for about 45 minutes and killed it.

The application is a 68 A body, 318/4 speed - Thanks

Hmmm..
Sounds like you didn't have enough clearance between the throwout bearing and the pressure plate..
So the throwout bearing was turning all of the time. Thats why we always pull the inspection plate and make the free play adjustment down below. Too often we find too much slack in the pedal and rod mechanism, another issue is to make sure you have the proper Z-bar. A few are the same width but the tab for the clutch rod that pushes back on the fork is mounted in different places..

Just my $0.01..

thats only reason being stuck in traffic for 45 min would kill a bearing

I thought the same thing, I pulled the cover last night and the TOB is still all the way back but the bearing is seized. When it first started making noise I pulled to the shoulder to make sure the spring on the fork had not broke or come off since that would let the TOB rest on the pressure plate.

The Z bar may be an issue, I'm using one from a '68 340 car since I couldn't locate one for a '68 318, they were supposed to be the same but I haven't been able to find one from a 318 car to compare it with.
