Best way to drain all trans fluid? - 02/17/10 08:21 PM

Trying to drain all trans fluid, replacing ATF with type F, and looking for a way to get all the fluid out of the torque convertor too...

I have a drain plug, but wondering if I can put it in drive with wheels chocked, until it runs dry, then put it back into park??

Looking to get all the old fluid out, and it currently has a drain plug on the pan only.

I didnt want to mix ATF with Type F so was looking to replace all the fluid if possible, even the converter fluid even though it doesnt have a drain plug on the converter

I would not worry about it.

Is the ATF in there now burnt ?

The only way to get ALL of the fluid out is to completely disassemble the trans and clean the parts with solvent.

The small amount remaining after a pan/converter drain won't bother the new fluid.

Is there a preferred way to drain the converter without a drain plug in the converter?

The only way I know how to is to drain the pan, refill it and run it to circulate the new fluid, then drain and refill the pan again.

You'll change about 1/2 of the fluid each time, so after 1 change, you've got 50% new fluid, after 2, 75% and after three about 90%. Overfill it a little on the 1st and 2nd refill and you'll get slightly higher percentages.

I'd recommend changing it twice, then driving it a bit, let it sit for a few days, drive it some more, then drop and clean the pan and change the filter. The drive - sit - drive cycles will let the new detergents clean out any buildup of gunk, which should end up in the pan and on the filter. You might also get slightly more out than just pulling the plug.

You REALLY are worried about something that is not important.

B U T .. if draining the converter is soooo important .. you will have to REMOVE the converter from the vehicle and have the ATF suctioned out.
