Gas guage reading full all the time? - 02/11/10 11:59 AM

I have a 68 Polara I am working on. The gas guage is reading full. Where do I look for the problem? It ran out of gas in the garage last nite so I know the gauge is lying to me!!LOL

Unplug the sender and see if it goes down . Sounds like its grounded somewhere .

yes w key "on", unplug it at the tank & if it goes back to E either the sending unit inside the tank is shorted to ground or the wire from the female connector forward to the dash is grounded somewhere along that line under the carpet.

After I changed from a 3/8" to a 1/2" fuel pickup, my gas gauge always reads Full, too. Does that sound like the sending unit is shorted as mentioned above, or could it be the float arm adjustment being different between the two pickup assemblies?

Because this only happened after you changed sending units I would think it had something to do with the float arm

Unless the arm on the replacemnet unit is a lot higher then the original, which it shouldn't be if you bought the correct sending unit, you have a shorted wire also.

What they said, key on, pull female connector off & if it goes back to E then plug it back in & if it goes back to/stays at F then run it out of gas as close as you dare and pull the sender & check it's ohms w the float "up" and "down". iirc the specs are 73? & 10 ohms but with it reading full constantly then it'll be apparent where it's grounded. W the sending unit electrical located halfway up on the side of the tank the whole thing gets submerged when the tank if filled and it's in effect a dead short to ground just like when you ground the female connector and that's why the gauge stays on F for along time when you first fill the tank until the level goes down far enough so it's actually below the windings then the gauge starts to show the correct reading.

No it doesn't at present, but the wiring is messed up by the alternator. I haven't got to that area yet.

Check for 5 volts at the strip leading to the fuel gauge, It is possible that your voltage limiter is not working.
