can a 71 cuda road lamp relay be used in a 70 cuda ? - 02/03/10 06:53 PM

Can a 1971 cuda Road Lamp Relay (4 terminal) be used to plug in and safely work on my 1970 cuda using its factory 70 cuda wire harness ? I could not find a repro 70 Relay but Evan’s sells the 71 style. I know the 71 Relay has 4 terminals and the 70 Relay has only 3, but the harness plug configuration is similar and can plug the 71 relay directly into the 70 harness but there will be an extra single terminal left on the other end of the 71 Relay unused . Please reply ONLY if you are sure and have actually done this before,I don't want to damage anything under the dash. What will I need to do to the single extra terminal on the opposite end of the relay for safety ?

The relay isn't required to operate the road lamps on a 70. The relay is for the running and side marker lights.

OK I understand, but, if I want my running and side marker lights to turn on with my Road Lamps switch as you suggest as per factory operation , can a 71 Relay be directly pluggged into my 70 harness, or adapted/wired in so it will operate the same as a factory 70 Relay in my 70 cuda ?

I don't have a 71 relay to give you a definitive answer. The unknown factor is the +12vdc coming from the headlight dimmer switch. On the 71, the road lamps are disabled when you turn on the high beams. I don't know if the +12vdc from the dimmer switch supplies power to the road lamps or the relay.
Maybe someone with a 71 relay can map out the terminal connections and describe what they do and how they do it?

I see an NOS on Ebay for almost $400 & a while ago a used for $150 which they won't guarantee it works or willing to test, too much to spend on a used electrical part that may or may not work. I hope Evan's or another will repop a new`70 for the same price as Evan's `71 relay which is $90 which is guaranteed to work as it is a new part.
Until this happens, I hope someone can tell me if the `71 can be connected safely to 70 harness, even if I need to make a short adapter with my connecters to use, so I can use new 71 from Evan's . My 70 cuda is not a high dollar show only car, I just want to cruise/drive it will all switches functional as stock.
Hope someone out there has tryed the relay swap, or can electrically map out the 71 relay.
thanks Doug.

Check with Evans. If they are the same people that make the wiring harnesses, they will know the answer to your question. They should be able to supply a modified cable that will work for your application.

OK I understand now it's a money issue not availability... ......

It is my recollection that the only electrical reason the relay needs to be on the 70 harness is to operate the headlamp delay circuit should your car have it. I believe the 70 roadlamps will work fine without the relay plugged in unless you have the delay circuit.

71 has the relay to toggle the roadlmaps off when high beams are turned on.
