Differences between 1968 and 69/70 Road Runner doors??? - 01/20/10 05:24 PM

I'm in the process of restoring a 70 road runner vert that I got as a project.

It came with a replacement door, but I noticed the door lock/unlock button is positioned at the end of the door. My 70 has it midway to the front of the car.

I don't want to buy a new door shell, but my door has cancer as well as needing to be reskined due to collision damage.

Can I use the 68 door on my 70 road runner just by drilling the necessary holes to move the door lock to the proper position? I would then weld the other hole shut.

I have more pics if needed. But it appears the only difference in the doors I have is the lock buttons position.

Any help is appreciated

thanks
Tom

I did it on my 69. Welded up one hole, drilled another. Linkage may need switched also.

....68 are 1 yr only as far as the lock location, and a few other items, you'll need to switch the window regulator, vent window channel as 68 glass runs/channels are different, including the 1 at the back of the door, swap over your 69-70 stuff, might have to drill a few holes on the reg install IIRC

Rather than go to all the effort I'd sell your door (if its decent) and get the right one. I've bought 2 shells over the past 2 years for $100. each and both were as good as you'd ever get without being a repro. They aren't that hard to find.

I've searched and haven't found anyone that makes a full skin for these.

You're not limited to Plymouth doors, Coronets are the same inside. If you do that, make a template of your RR nameplate holes. I think Dayclona addressed the inner workings '68 vs '69/'70.

I'll probably modify the door. Drilling some new holes and plugging the old hole is a piece of cake.
Thanks!

There are also two different doors for 68 as well. The inner structure was changed as soon as they realized that the door lock button was too hard to reach! The early doors didn't have the recess in the area where the cantilever linkage for the 69 door button bolts to. Fortuneately, your green 68 door CAN be converted to the 69-70 style-it is recessed. I have had MANY doors where this area is raised (no recess), and the bolt would not let the door panel lay flat. I have found/had examples of, this on '68 A-body, 68 B-body, and 68 Charger doors. Probably have some still.

Well I hope they have changed the way they attach the skin to the frame on the AMD doors, the skin was stitch welded on the inside. You could never make it look original. That's what the display 68 Road Runner had. And anyways, this post was about using an existing door!

Not to mention the price is RIDICULOUS.

Exactly! I just made the modifications last night. It took a half hour to save $600.
