Disc brake conversion question(s)

Disc brake conversion question(s) - 12/28/09 05:15 PM

I am shopping for a front disc brake kit for a 1969 Road Runner, non power brakes. Anyone ever use the CPP brakes kit?

http://www.classicperform.com/NewProducts/MoparBrakeKits/Mopar_Brake_Kits.htm

The price seems right... any other suggestions?

I was also thinking of not converting to power discs (using a new non power disc/drum master cylinder with adjustable prop valve). Would this work?

Thanks

You can do it for less using the FMJ spindles.

Get the spindles, backing plates, caliper brackets for $150 or less and buy new rotors, calipers, bearings and go.

This would be the way I go if not interested in the power brake set up. I've read the boosters in those kits can be problematic.

PM me if you are interested in doing the FMJ spindle conversion.

I went with the SSBC kit.Comes with EVERYTHING for the conversion and fit the exsisting spindles. No fancy rotor upgrade,no power brakes and no more stains trying to stop 3850 lbs on short tracks.Slowin' down after a 135 mph 1/4 mile pass is a breeze. This is a street kit and comes with 4 piston calipers which I prefer over the single puck.I put over 3000 street miles a year on my junk

I'd be real careful of the booster in that kit. I bought a kit from a vender off of the east coast that is a member here on Moparts. It was a nice kit except for the fact that the booster was all wrong and I had to be real creative running the brake lines out of the GM master cylinder. The booster is a joke, it does not match up to the firewall, and you have to do some hack job surgery to make it fit.

Thanks for your reply -

The SSBC kit is $995 on their site. I guess I need to decide if it is worth the extra $$$. I thought that using the same spindles with discs would change my steering geometry and/or widen the track?

Will the SSBC kit clear my sway bar?

How big are the rotors in each of those kits?

I'd call Cass a.k.a. Dr Diff. Can't go wrong there!

when I wanted to upgrade my M to the 11.75" rotors, I found an R body (81 5th ave) in the junkyard, told them I want the caliper adapters, but I couldn't get them off (flat tires sitting in muck). told me to come back the next day, I asked how much, they said $20. came back the next day, they took a cutting torch to the UCA, LCA and tie rod, and gave me EVERYTHING (spindles, rotors, calipers, brackets, and 2 15x7 rims with flat tires) for $20......

anyway, the kits shown in that link are basically repro F/M/J stuff (10.87" rotors). you should be able to get everything (spindles outward) from a junkyard off of a 5th ave for $50 or less. for new rotors/reman calipers/pads/seals/bearings (basically only using the JY spindles and caliper adapters)

from rockauto:

reman calipers w/hardware: $37/pr
bendix ceramic pads: $21/set
rotors (raybestos): $96/pr
grease seals: $4/pr
SKF inner bearings: $16/pr
SKF outer bearings: $14/pr

total: $188

so, assuming $50 for the spindles & caliper adapters (I'd also grab the proportioning valve from the donor car), ~$200 for new hardware, probably another $40 max for hoses & a can of rustoleum for the spindles and caliper adapters, you have basically the $400 kit for $300.

grab the JY master cyl & booster, or pick up a reman master cyl/booster ($133 for the 5th ave power one, or $60 for an F body manual one) and you have the $599 kit for under $400.

Re: Disc brake conversion question(s) - 12/30/09 07:29 PM

I did the FMJ Swap (from a '77 volare) about 5 yrs ago - I couldn't be happier. It probably cost $150 total (because I got new calipers & rotors, etc). But the overall 'structure' is the best way. I also tied this into my suspension/steering upgrade
to really, really upgrade the steering & handling. Together w/ the used brake setup, this B'cuda is a whole new car. I would like to do a 'firm feel' steering box (but am too cheap to shell out $400+).

My only issue, though, is how to get my front sway bar hooked into this new system.

Nonetheless, I would totally go w/ the junkyard route & save the extra $$$ to put into the front & rear suspension, or whatever else.

...and definitely - NON-Power Brakes. Just plain wrong for the A-Body, IMHO.
