Street Car undercarriages???? - 12/27/09 06:20 AM

I am wondering what you guys have done to the undercarriages of your car, for everyday or regular drivers. I have replaced my floors and want to do a quality job with my undercarriage for keeping rust away and protecting it. I am curious as to if you guys use undercoating, bedliner, or what anyone has used. Any thoughts are appreciated

First seal it with etching primer & paint... Properly applied paint is very effective at preventing rust... After paint if you want to use undercoating to prevent rock chips & other damage to the paint thats fine...

Agree good paint first. Etching primer to start if the steel is clean/bright. If it isn't perfectly rust free, use Red Rustoleum or Eastwood "Rust Encapsulator" primer first then a quality paint. I like to seal the seams after priming.

First grease and wax remover to get rid of all the grease and finger prints. Then a lite sand blasting, then etch primer, then epoxy primer and then color. It'll out last any factory finish without under coating. IMO

I've found that a leaky drain plug on the oil pan can make a very nice misting/coating of oil under the entire car, and is a very good rust preventer!

it's just not very pretty!

When I had my Challenger I used that oil based stuff..Zero Rust I think, it was black, dried kinda semi glossy..cleaned off really well and just made for a clean look over, you can always paint color of it if you like.

Is there anything that looks like the factory undercoating? I replaced about 70% of my chargers' underside and need to protect the new stuff but am not sure if I want to scrape off the factory stuff and paint or make the new stuff match the undercoated/old stuff?

On mine I just left it bare, with some surface rust exposed here and there underneath. Really on a summer-only car it doesn't get any worse over time. However I have been thinking of pressure washing it underneath, cleaning it up as best I can and hitting it with some primer then undercoating just to seal it up and make it look better.

I have found the Napa brand undercoating applied with a shutz gun gives a nice finish. I have used the aerosol bedliner spray on the top side of floors under the rug there I wanted it to dry harder than undercoating does.

Resto Rick's undercoating is as close as you can get to the factory undercoating as far as texture and appearance. It also sets up nice and hard, unlike most other products.

Do you happen to know what prep is involved? I have such pristine floors now I hate to cover it up with undercoating, but it like my other car, will get driven a lot and hate to see it rust and keeping paint clean under there seems like an impossible task driving the car regularly. I replaced the full floor, footwells, torsion bar mounts, rear frame rails, full trunk, inner/outer wheelhouses and want to protect it as I won't be doing that again.

... 2 part primer, overspray with body color...rust check/crown or whatever clear undercoat you like...it will outlast you..
...now if it's a show car that oil probably won't be too welcome.

i overrestored. painted bottom in single stage urethene. has lasted 6 years, but that is weekend driving. I did undercoat whereever rocks hit, espicially in wheelwells.
It washes up and still looks new!

I used Resto Rick's undercoat and I thought it was fantastic. You can apply it light or heavy to your liking. With a little practice, you can achieve a "clean" or OEM (nasty) look. I recommend 2 cans at least if you are doing an entire under body. It sucks to run out and have to clean up twice... stuff is pretty messy. Get a Shutz gun.

When I restored my 69 Bee I painted the undercarriage the same as the rest of the car. Twenty years and thirty six thousand miles later it still looks good. I clean the undercarriage a couple time a year. I put the car on jack stands grab a good spray cleaner, a hand full of clean rags and wipe it down.

I drive my 63 alot in the warmer weather. I put front floor pans in it and then just sealled them. I cleaned off all the loose undercoating and then painted the underneath with rustolium gloss black. I like the gloss black as it is easier to clean off if it gets dirty underneath from driving alot. If you scroll down on the link you can see the underneath on my 63. Ron

I used POR 15 on my 70 cuda
I held up incredibly well. I have used POR 15 recently but did not have the same good results, (came off in strips) I would not likely use it again. I think it has changed formulas

I just spent about 30 hours removing the original undercoating off my car. The undercoating did its job, my floors look like new. I am waiting for the weather to break so I can finally paint it. I picked up a POR15 kit. I went with the semi gloss finish. I cant wait to finish up this project. I never thought that taking undercoating was going to be such a big job.

It must have changed formulas because I had the same peeling results as you, and I followed their prep instructions to a T.

After all that work do not use PoR 15 you will have a mess when it peels off in sheets. DAMHIK

I have heard mixed results about the por15. I was told by a few people that if you do not use there cleaner and metal ready, it will peel off. Now you guys are getting me worried. Did you use the metal ready before you applied the POR15?

I used ppg dp epoxy primer followed by dark grey ppg dcc paint that was flattened out to look like the factory primer that was left standing in the floor pan seams.

Not eastwood,can is at the shop...but I used eastwood high temp paint on exhaust and intake manifolds and couldn't ask for anything better. Will get the black brand out later
