gasket between trans filter and vb? - 12/23/09 07:47 PM

Is there supposed to be a gasket between the transmisson filter and the valvle body?

727. I saw an ad for one on ebay. The filter and a gasket.

The new one I picked up today doesn't come with one, and none of the ones listed at the parts store do either. They all come with just the pan gasket.

The listing that says "filter and gasket" would be referring to the pan gasket

Thank you Andrewh, I'll remember that if I ever am selecting a filter (w gasket ) for one of the early ones.

Chrysler was noted for over engineering, they probably determined the gasket wasn't needed and dropped it. Rockauto lists the early Torqueflite filter with the rear pump opening for less than $5 with a pan gasket, for those of you interested. Wix and Fram both have applications.

FWIW If you find yourself doing a trans service on a Ford with the AOD trans there is a gasket & if you neglect to install it the trans will go into neutral everytime the driver makes a right turn... I've fixed lots of them...

I've never rebuilt a mopar trans older than 1968,but there was never a gasket.I've also dealt with pat blais before on older trans parts and he is the best.

Reminds me of the time I did the filter on the missus' Mustang Cobra. I didn't know the filter held a check ball in place. Lucky it landed in the shop rag.

I'm not aware of a check ball, was it round or did it have a mushroom shape?

Sort of like one of those mystery-assembly-piece-that-isn't-needed-but-freaks-out-the-tech-that-does-the-first-service plastic thingies?

GOOD flowing filter ... probably the best HP filter out there. The gasket is needed to seal the metal-to-metal contact ... but is not required on the stock-type dacron. And it WILL fit the later model trans ... but for almost 35 beans ? ..

A tad on the pricey side !

Yeah sorta like that.. It's a seal plug to keep dirt out of the dipstick hole of the trans between the tranny being built & installed.. They had a typical cap-plug that had to be removed but found that it was quicker to have a plug that could be pushed itno the tranny while installing the dipstick...

It's been ages since either a ball or a small rod or pin with a spring. I think I realized what I did when I was looking up the pan bolt torque or band adjustment value before I put the pan on. One of those deals where I didn't read the FSM before I started because who would use the filter body to retain vital parts?
