Another throttle cable question

Another throttle cable question - 12/23/09 02:55 AM

I recently changed the intake system on my 67 Chrysler 300 to an Eddy Performer dual plane intake and an Eddy Thunder AVS carb. The throttle cable on my car was not the original one and was incorrect anyway. Someone on the C body site stepped up and sent me what was probably the correct original equipment cable. My car has the 440 hi po engine and automatic.

The cable he sent works, but my throttle now is SUPER sensitive...Just a light touch on the pedal gives an overly enthusiastic response. The cable is 18.5" long...I'm thinking since the Eddy manifold is a bit higher than the original 440 cast iron manifold that I could use a bit longer throttle cable. Any ideas out there??

won't be anything to do with cable length. You should have the chrysler throttle linkage adapter on the carb, Edelbrock makes it. This will keep the ratio's right for the cable and the Kickdown rods.

Put a heavier return spring on the carb.

Stumpy,

Where can I get a heavier return spring? My mechanic did a search on-line and bought "supposed" to be the correct throttle return and tranny kick-down springs. How can you tell a heavier return spring??
I should say, my tranny is shifting super-soft now too. You can hardly notice the shifts at all, athough they seem to be at the correct speeds. Could this be due to the kick-down spring not being heavy enough also??

The return spring will just make it a little harder to push the pedal down so you won't get on it so hard so quick. Any hardware store will have a choice of springs. You just look for one the same length as the one you have only harder to strecth.

Why on earth would you want a stiffer than necessary pedal? could you post a picture of your setup? do you have the right linkage and adapter for the Eddy carb like I said?

if you dont have the adapter, the "spin ratio" of the carb is off, likewise for the kickdown. the adapter puts the cable at the correct distance from the throttle shafts

It does have the adapter. The pedal is very soft and small motions on the throttle cable cause BIG changes in response at the carb. Kinda hard to explain...I have to VERY gingerly press the gas pedal otherwise the car will JUMP like crazy.

well unless you have a thousand horsepower you have something screwy with the linkage and the cable idea and a stiffer spring aint gonna do squat.
Do you have a picture you could post. I'm sure it's an obvious problem if we could see it.

I designed up a taller throttle bracket years ago to solve this problem. You can buy the kit from Mancini Racing or Hughes Engines if you want. The only issue is that this bracket kit is designed to work with the three piece kickdown linkage. Not sure what type of kickdown linkage your Chrysler 300 has on it. You might need to do some custom fabrication to make it all work.

Well, thanks Andy and all...I'll try to post some pictures. Believe me, even if you touch the throttle lever if you are trying to do something in the engine compartment you get the same thing. Little touch....HUGE response...kinda like an ON/OFF switch. LOTS or LITTLES
