318 to 400 transplant. Is it worth it?

318 to 400 transplant. Is it worth it? - 07/19/08 12:52 PM

Recently bought 72 satellite sebring with a tired 318. Was hoping to find 440 to make roadrunner clone. Found a 400 complete and running out of a 72 newport with 65K. The guy is asking $200. Want to keep this a low budget project. Should I jump on the 400 or wait for 440? Need to change trans if going from 318 to 400 correct? Anything else?

Thanks!!

I think you'll find that the 400 lacks the power you seek. For $200 if it has all the big block brackets accesories etc it will be worth far more than $200 in parts GRAB IT. The big block trans is different, plan on a driveshaft change too
You always can sell the 400 to someone wanting to build a 451, or build one yourself later

With gas prices, I think I would redo the 318.
maybe a nice cam to give it a little thump.
Sounds great and great gas mileage is a plus in these days.

I would use a 360 before a 400. You can get 360s at the junk yard for $60-120. And other than the driver side mount and converter (or flywheel) balance every thing else off the 318 will work.

I swaped a 318 to a 69 RR383HP in a 67 satellit and it was worth it to me, it cost me a total of 1800 bucks and that was with selling the 318 for 600 bucks because it only had 4000 miles (reman) BUT the Satellite is a bigger car. I would put a 360 in because of weight issues and the potential overheating. Either way it will cost you some cash but with the SB you can keep your trannie

Yeah, and the only 440 he's likely to find that could be dropped right in is going to be a low compression era 70's 440, which comming from experience is no ground pounder in bone stock form either.

If I had to do it again, instead of converting from 318 -> 440, I think I would build a turbo or supercharged 318 instead. Either that or find a 80's+ 318/360 with a factory roller cam and use that as a basis for a stroker build. But I know the OP wants to keep the budget down. I guess it really depends what your long-term goals are if you have them.

Just remember, bare minimum if you buy your big block motor/trans you will need a shorter driveshaft as well as either a big block K frame or the engine-swaps.com conversion mounts.

But if you want to drop in the big block, run it in stock form at first and slowly start throwing parts at it like an intake, headers, very mild cam, etc over the next couple years, the 400 is a good candidate. For the price, just deal with the 40 less cubes of the 400 and move on. 400 will be a little easier to work on under the hood because it is a little bit smaller than a 440. Slowly over time throw your mods at the 400(but keep it very mild so long as you are running the stock low compression 400 pistons) and slap a 383 pie tin on it and call it a day. If you ever decide to rebuild, some say the 400 is a better block for a stroker build than the 440 if you ever decide you really want to get some cubes out of it.

i picked up a 73 413 for $200 and its a low compression motor ,, but ive already put 906 heads eddy rpm cam and a tm7 intake , that motor sounds killer .but yeah if i was you i would go out and find 360 or just pay more for a 440 setup .if you dont already have the big block setup and not willing to spend the money and dont do it , it will be a long journy and money blowing setup, i know ive done it twice .

I would say it's a good deal. Like was said even if it is a stock low comp 400 you can change that later. I myself like th bigblock torque in heavy a B-body. You can always stroke it later or just build the stock stroke 400. My son's Dart weighs almost 3600 with him and a full tank of gas and his stock stroke 400 has run 11.40's in his stock body Dart so yes you can make a stock stroke 400 run good. His is nothing fancy as the Eddy heads are his best part on his stock stroke 400. Ron

Not to rob the thread, but I think what he is
saying is that they stopped making 413's well
before 1973.

build up a 360. if you can get a solid low compression motor...supercharge it. use a a/c style belt clutch and you can cruise for economy or burn the tires off the rims. the best part is you can get away with all the smogger era gear.

Not "low budget." If you want to keep it cheap (I know I'l get for this), stroke your 318. Read the thread a page over titled 390 Cordoba (or something close to that).

1973 was the last year of the motorhome 413 so they made 413's in 1973

THAT is a 1973 motorhome 413 in a 1977 Road Runner. I know because I bought it in 1979 and put it together.

they did , but 413 and 400 were in the motorhomes and big truck, they have those water pumper heads on them , if you ill git it later , tripped me out to when i got it last week. but yeah the 413 was around in the 70s just a low compression motor , the best way to do some resurce is on 440 source orig parts http://www.440source.com/timingcovers.htm check out the timing cover on the bottom http://www.440source.com/wpumphousings.htm the huge water pump housing in their is in the 413 to

Re: 318 to 400 transplant. Is it worth it? - 07/19/08 11:53 PM

i say go for it. b bodies and b motors go together like pb and jelly. i think in 72 all the v8 k-members are the same except for hemis so all you will need is mounts, bb tranny and driveshaft...and prob a radiator.if you plan on putting the engine in as is, at least put a new timing chain set in. sure the compression may be less than 8:1 but a stock 400 with 4v and a mild cam will be night and day compared to the 318 you have now. put it in, have fun and save your money to build a killer motor for later.

you know what you are right , they are like night and day ,,,,, have some fun with the 400 but ill tell you this you will never look back to the small block ever again once you go big , all your ganna wanna do is go bigger and bigger , next thing you know your ordering a stroker kit from 440source for that 400 and bam you have a 500 stroker with their alum heads and the cam setup , you will never ever look back to the small block stage with that kind of power

Re: 318 to 400 transplant. Is it worth it? - 07/20/08 02:51 PM

I'd use the low compression 400. Turbochargers and superchargers like low compression ratio engines. Be sensible with the boost and have plenty of power, fun, and reliability.

Re: 318 to 400 transplant. Is it worth it? - 07/21/08 03:31 AM

How is it a "turbo or blower" fits into a low budget? What is the absolute cheapest blower for a mopar- 4 5 6 grand?? Remind me to not inquire about low cost ideas here. In the old days you could take a GOOD running sound smogger (B/RB)and put a better cam, intake, carb and good dual exhaust and have a torquey mill on a budget. A 400 done this way is no match for a 1970 440 magnum but its leaps and bounds ahead of the 318 he has. Plus the 400 smogger holds major potential for future changes when money permits. For $200 he is getting all those nuisance parts youd have to hunt down. Having a driveshaft made or modified professionally is not expensive. Good tight 400 with a Comp Cams High energy cam, weiand action plus dual plane, vac secondary holley, cheap headers with dual exhaust and cheapie turbos would be a new world compared to a teen.

Re: 318 to 400 transplant. Is it worth it? - 07/21/08 03:40 PM

If it runs good and needs nothing.... $200 for a running motor is a good deal. Sell off your 318, hunt down the parts to change it over to a big block, and swap it in. Drive it, and build a 440 later if you want.

Personally I'd find a 360 and drop it into place. The money you save on a BB trans you could probably locate a running 360 or donor car/truck/van...

Just be careful... it's a slippery slope. My 318 was in really poor shape and somebody GAVE me a 360 Volare wagon. My weekend/low-buck swap spiraled WAAAAY out of control into a rebuilt motor and trans and over two years of time and saving.

And remember.... there is no shame in a Satellite. They all don't have to be turned into RR clones...
