bellhousing - 12/08/09 07:29 AM

i am desperately searching for a bellhousing for my engine swap with no luck. i have been scavenging the local yards trying to find a vehicle that has a LA small block mated to a A833 OD tranny with no luck. Can someone tell me if there are any other trannies that might be bolted to the same bellhousing? Or is does it have to be a A833 OD only? is there such a thing as an A833 OD/LA318 bellhousing? i am pulling my slant six in favor of a 318, and wanted to keep my A833 OD. This is crippling my engine swap, please help!

They are out there but they arent that common. Most V8 trucks had the big heavy cast iron tranny behind their engines. I was lucky enough to nab one from a member here years ago and I'm putting it to use in my '86 stepside project behind a 318 and in front of a cast iron A-833OD

Your best bet is to find a standard one and either have the hole milled out for the A-833 bearing retainer or have your bearing retainer (the big round thing that bolts to the front of your tranny with 4 bolts) turned down.

I'm not sure about bearing retainer specs, hopefully someone else can chime in with those soon.

Does your clutch fork pivot on a ballstud or the more common clip type pivot? You will need to change the flywheel/clutch also. Both styles of SB O/D bells are 10.5". /6 Truck used a 9.5" wheel with a 10" clutch. We can set you up with the parts you need to do the swap.

I have a small block aluminum bellhousing laying around with a large bearing retainer opening. Let me know what the part number is and I will check it. I am more familiar with the big block stuff than the small block stuff.

Any '76 or later car or truck with a SB and 833 will have the OD trans.
