just suspension torsion bars - 11/22/09 04:09 AM

Hi all
i have a new set of t/bar's from J/S and i'm a little concerned about the left and right sides as they are not marked and have a preset built into them.

here is a cut'n'paste from an article.

Mopar torsion bars are preset at the factory in the direction of use. You can observe this preset by laying the bars down on a flat surface and observing how the bar is twisted. The driver’s side bars will have a 30 degree right hand twist. A passenger side bar will have a 30 degree left handed twist. Pre-setting the bars in this manner improves the load carrying capacity in the pre-set direction. But, the load carrying capacity is reduced in the other direction of twist. This is why it is so important to get the bars installed on the correct side of the car.

[insert graphic illustrating left hand and right hand windup. ]

This illustration shows the pre-set twist that is built into the Chrysler torsion bars. In this illustration, the groove at the rear of the bar is vertical in both cases. The groove at the front of the bar shows the 30 degree twist in the direction of suspension load. This twist is put into the bar during fabrication and is done to strengthen the bar. If the bars are put on the wrong side, they will be loaded against the pre-set and will not be able to carry their rated load.

The bars both have the same number on them on one end and the other end has a star symbol.

I'd like to hear you thought's on this , maybe some of you guys have used the same bars.
Cheers Luke.

Here is how you id them. Once you know right from left, then you just install them. There is no difference in front or back so long as the twist is on the correct side.

What size are they, I think at a certain point the larger bars are not side dependent.

they are a 1" bar, they have an offset hex, that is when you lay them side by side you have one end with the hex flat and the other end will sit up on the sharp of the hex.
Maybe they don't have a preset to them, as far as i can tell if they do have this preset, one bar is twisted more than the other. it's hard to tell as there is no line across the hex.
i shall get back with some pic's so you can see what i'm trying to explane.
Thanks for the help on this guys.

Call them up on their toll-free number and ask, they really should mark them for you. You can compare the direction of offset to the ones you take out...

They apparently are the same for both sides

I installed then around spring time and had to call and ask - the 1" bars

the answer - there is NO left, right, front or back

BUT

once you install them you need to keep them in the direction and orientation you originally installed them
