I was trying to adjust my front floats on my 750 dbl pumper and gas started spewing of of the adjustment screw and nut. Am I doing something wrong?

Couple things here:
1) the HEX portion actually controls the fuel level. The slotted bolt on top is the lock. Make sure you loosen the lock first, and tighten it last, while holding the hex with a wrench.
2) The gaskets are very delicate (especially the one under the hex), they don't put up with much before they leak. There are vinyl replacements on ebay that work pretty good and are FAR tougher. You can just buy Holley replacements though.

Yes you are using a holley. Get an Eddy carb. its the best thing I ever did.

I appreciate your Eddy vote, but my holley is paid for. Actually I discovered some plug wires that might have not been on all the way. I fixed that and richened the carb a tad, and it now runs pretty good for a tired old motor. I also noticed my front bowl fuel level was a little low so that got adjusted as well. I lost the level sight bolt(long & stupid story, not really that long either), and went to purchase another as well as a new needle and seat. I discovered that Moroso makes a clear sight plug so that was a nice addition.

My Holley's were "paid for" as well, and I had to replace needles/seats once a year, adjust the floats, etc., and got so tired of it I sprung for a used Edelbrock, and only have to get in and start it now. When I want. Without fidling. Well worth it, I thought!!!!!

No, I still have one that runs fine (I use premium with all sorts of additives).......I will keep it.......but I think in my area anyway, that the gasoline being sold really affects older carbs. I mean, I had to replace the needles/seats once a year, the rubber was cracking. I was going to try viton tips next, but it flooded, backfired, and sprayed the engine with gas REAL good and scared the crap out of me. I had dual 600's, they never ran well together, and I just got fed up, I am sure some of you have been there.
