440 Valve Adjusting - 10/26/09 04:31 PM

I am new at working with Chrysler engines. Can someone give me a quick run down on how to adjust the valves on a 440. It has aftermarket aluminum adjustable rockers.
Thanks

Follow the 273 or T/A valve adjustment instructions on the sticker, ie TDC then adjust intake on valves X and y, exhaust on valves y and z. Rotate crank 90 and then do these other valves, etc. Basically, you are adjusting the valves on the base circle of the cam lobe and the crank position helps. If you cant find the instructions, you are safe adjusting the valve in the cylinder when the other valve just starts lifting.

Do one cylinder at a time.
When the exhaust starts to go down set the intake.
When the intake is almost at the top set the exhaust.

"Rockover" method. pull plugs/turn crank w 1&1/4" socket & breaker bar. turn it until the both valves on #1 cyl are moving and are at the same height, at that point adj the clearance on #6. Then turn it until both valves on #6 are moving and are at the same height, at that point adj the clearance on #1. Then go to the next vertical column (8 & 5) & repeat(disregard the A & B) & then the next 2 columns. If the spec is for example .020", a .019" flat feeler gauge should have no drag and a .021" gauge should have light drag & with the gauge held square this will get you within .001" of your spec. EDIT forgot the diagram (it's Monday)

This is directly from Damon Kuhn at Diamondback:

"Double check them before you fire (cold)-they should be .004 or so (+/-.002) LOOSER than the spec- warm it up and adjust to spec- turn it by hand or bump it on the starter unntil the exhaust for the cylinder you are adjusting is just beginning to open- adjust the intake to spec at that point. Then roll all the way thru the exhaust opening and closing and the intake opening and when it is almost closed or just barely closed (in that range) , adjust the exhaust. Doing it this way insures the most accurate setting and allows going from front to rear on the drivers side and the same on the passenger side- you should only have to turn more than a bump when doing number 8"
