Tree sap removal ? - 10/22/09 06:06 PM

Just bought a 96 LHS; nice car unfortunately previous owner parked beneath a tree and car is just covered with sap. Already tried Acrysol and some mild detergent but it's pretty stubborn. Anyone have any ideas? I can chip it off with my fingernail, but it's not a Colt-sized vehicle. Like to try something that won't tear the clearcoat up.

Really-really hot (wear rubber gloves) water with with lots of detergent has always worked for me.

Hot soapy water and a wash mitt. Wax afterward.

I should also mention that engine degreaser works great for taking off road tar too.

Still, you are better off using hot soapy water,no chance what so ever of any paint damage.

I use 3M adhesive remover.

Soak a couple of them with a good penetrating oil (not WD40) for an hour. If they don't soften up it's going to be tough. Around here the sap leaking trees are acidic and even if you get the sap off it's already too late after 24 hours. The sap penetrates into the clear coat and ruins the paint under the drip.

I have had good luck with both WD-40 and kerosene.

Naphtha might also work, but you would want to test it on an inconspicuous painted area first.

lacquer thinner, acetone, nail polish remover, mineral spirits, gasoline, kerosene, reducer will work just fine ,common sense helps not to cause any damage to the paint,

avoid scrubbing, scratching or applying pressure, never use scotch pad, nails, razors, putty knife,e.t.c. unless you're planning to repaint

Goof Off or Goo Be Gone

Great stuff.

I used it to get road paint lines off my truck. Buffed and waxed after I was done. Looked like new.
