I need helpl with a carb fire I am having with my 6 pk - 10/09/09 03:12 AM

Can someone helpl me with my 6 pk setup. When I try to start the car it turns over, but sputs and shoots fire out the center carb and then the fire continues to smolder as it burns the residual off. What am I doing wrong?? Thanks much for helping get my Mopar on the road.

Your timing is too far advanced, firing before the intake valves are closed..... Back off the Initial Timing....

Maybe you mixed up a couple of spark plug wires?

Backfiring through the carbs is more likely caused by an overly lean (not enough fuel) condition. Most likely a inoperative choke. Also it has come to my attention (by letting my girls drive my old cars)that most young owners of "old" cars (has a carb)do not understand the concept of "pump the gas a few times before starting". This isn't their fault, since fuel injected vehicles have always done this for them. Also, if the problem is spark related (and not caused by crossed up plug wires, double check your firing order) it would have to be that the timing is retarted (slow) since the intake valve closes before the piston makes it very far at all from bottom dead center, otherwise it would pump the compression back into the intake manifold,(this can happen with a broken intake valve spring, or bent intake valve, missed any wide open power shifts lately?)

double check your float settings and also since you had a pop out of the carb you may have to check your power valve. may have ruptured the diaphram in that.

Is there a possibility your distributor is 180 degees off?,.........if and when you correct the problem, timing or fuel related, I'd suggest you replace the power valve on the center carb, as you MAY have ruptured it with repeated backfires
