727 upshifts, what to do next?? - 10/06/09 05:02 AM

727 behind my 67-440..

I have adjusted the kickdown linkage everyway I can and the tranny still shifts 1-2-3 way to fast for my liking.. Usually into third gear before I get through the intersection.. I have 294 rear end gears so you would think it would stay in 1st and 2nd a little longer... Shifts way to early at WOT also ( no tach so I can't say exactly)

What do I do next?? Valve body work?? New governor?? Any help....

It's the valve body.

Could also be a stuck governor on the tailshaft. In the book on rebuilding 727's there is a testing procedure using pressure gauges.

Disconnect the linkage from the top lever on the trans and operate it by hand, the lever should have increasing spring resistance as it is moved rearward and should hit a hard stop both for and aft. If the lever feels soft against the stops, the shaft might have broken loose from its internal cam. The pic below shows the weld that often breaks.

For my information does that lever you show in the pic have an internal spring? I felt no resistance on mine and added an external spring. It shifts perfect now. Before that it would over-center and bind. thanks

That level pushes a spool valve that has a very light spring on it... It should reach a solid stop in the forward direction when the bent tab contacts the limit screw.. It should have light spring tension then hit solid in the rearward direction when the spool bottoms in it's bore..
