no start

hi guys , just went to pull the charger out for a drive , not started it since april , no spark at all & as you return the key back to straight up , the motor kicks back , but return it to 1 nothing , every thing is new on the car ,
i filled the MP eletronic ignition , & duel feild alternator , back in march this year, car ran awesome be for i parked it can't think what it could be !! ignition switch gone & the MP orange box ??? , like i say ran awesome before being parked in april , not touched the car till today , had it in storage !!! now no spark at plugs ,
appreciate any help guys , tanks for your time , its be appreciated

I would verify good connection at ballast resistor, bulkhead connector etc. The resistor itself could fail, but not likely ignition swi problem.

If it kicks back on release of the key it means that it is getting spark in the run position. Try a new ballast resister. OR turn the key to the run position and then go under the hood and try to start it by jumping the relay terminals. Make sure that it is in park or neutral before doing this as it will start in any gear. It is nice to have the air cleaner off to so that you can pump the gas by hand when trying to start it.

Change the pick up coil

had a poke about today !! tryed cranking by leaving the ignition on run & a screwdriver in the starter relay !! cranked bu still no spark , have power both sides of the balast resistor , put new coil on just to say thats new !! when cranking the motor , not even sparks when you pull the coil lead off hold it close to feel it going click click
anything else to look for , before i sawp back to a points set up

take wire off of the negative coil primary terminal & w a jumper wire w alligator clips jump from this TERMINAL to good ground repeatedly tap tap like Morse Code & (w key on) see if that makes a spark from the coil to dist wire held 1/4" from ground. If yes I'd suspect the ECU, or the ECU ground, or the dist coil pickup (in that order). If no spark either the coil positive primary terminal is not getting fire via the ballast or the coil itself is bad. Check/clean the ECU base/body, ohm out the dist pickup leads (iirc 2-400 ohms) but the specs are in the archives or use a spare dist & spin it by hand (key on) & see if it now sparks, sub in a known good ECU (they (some of my used ones) have gone bad from sitting on the shelf).

The fact that on crank the car won`t start, with the understanding that the car is wired correctly, leaves the ballast resistor out of the equation. The ballast resistor is by passed on crank. The fact that when you release the key the engine starts for a split second is an indication of a bad dist pick up coil. If you have a DVOM disconnect the pick up coil and place the DVOM leads acrosss the pick up coil. Set the DVOM on the AC scale (yes the AC scale) and have someone crank the engine, you should see a voltage reading. Any reading is good, if no voltage reading replace the pick up coil and set the air gap to .010.

thanks again for the detailed replies , had a nother lookie yesteday , swaped in a known to be working coil pick up in a mp distributor , fired up only , with bearly half a crank on the key , not impressed the electronic set up has only about 200 miles on it , put my pionts set up back on for the moment , if the pick up coil is going to die in that milage or 6 months of the car being parked , thats not good , was even wondering weather to swap out the orange box , as have heard these things are not good now....

dist pickups go bad on occaision but not enough to worry about. I'd go ahead & use your electronic setup and gap your reluctor at .006-.008 at its tightest point (use a vacuum pump to pull it thru its travel). Same with the orange boxes w the newer ones being a bit more trouble prone (keep a spare in the glove box). I have an older FBO setup (coil/ballast) whereas I believe the newer setups from Don use no ballast & therefore full battery voltage to the coil but I havent used it yet but I've heard mostly good about his stuff and I was impressed from talking to him & he is trying to build a better mouse. I want to try one of his advance limiter plates.

thanks again for the infomation & susgestons , been looking up part numbers for the coil pick up in the distributor seen differen part numbers for them its for a 440 , & mp conversion kit .........
