How to obtain a new Title for old cars.... - 07/06/08 03:40 PM

Anyone ever use out of state title agencies to obtain a title for an old car?
I purchased a '69 Barracuda and need to get a new title for it in Ohio.
The car is a resto project and doesn't run, or have a motor in it for that matter.
International Title of Las Vegas wants Power of Attorney for their services, and I know nothing of Broadway Title in Al.
Ohio is a bit more stringent on their acceptance of out of state titles, so getting a title seems easy, but will good ole Ohio transfer it???
Help! Anyone!?

It's always a good idea to start with your state DMV.

I used Broadway Title Service. I know it sounds a little dicey, but it is all on the up and up and is a valuable service to the hobby. Do it, get a title and restore it! Old cars and their titles are often separated for various reasons.

I also used Broadway title title once with no problem at all. I would recommend them.

My buddy in Texas swears by Broadway.Just make sure the Vin is correct as you have to have a phisacal inspection done.Usually a car dealer does them.My last one for the 57 was like 6 bucks then to the title dept for a transfer.Rocky

Start with your DMV. I discussed the title services with mine. They told me they would accept it..... but I would still need to bond the title with them. I went through my DMV's system and it really was pretty easy and worked out great. What is important to me is that I also have a negotiable title that is legal and transferable. There are many arguements about previous owner interest, but after research this was the safest legal option for me.

Feel your pain Duster Dude. Am in the same situation with a Chally I aquired years ago thru a towing service I worked for. Ohio is a real P.I.T.A. to work with on titles. You tell the DMV the truth, and you hit a dead end, fabricate a tail of whooey and they'll reluctantly MAYBE issue a self-assembled title that looks screwy to a cop. Been pondering either Broadway or Getatitle.com. Some services even state in their adds that they will not under any cicumstances deal with Ohio or a half-dozen other states. Makes you realize they've had trouble also, and wonder what "Cure" the other guys have come up with. Or are you supplied with what you "Should need" in most states to get a title and when things don't work out you're left to haggle for your money back? Good luck and posts any results you come up with.

Broadway only sends you a license plate, registration and bill of sale notarized over to you. Not a title. With you having these items, you apply for a title in your state. This is with cars before 1975. It may be different 76 and up.

An issue I would be concerend with would be liens, stolen and things of this nature. The care has to be traced back for history owners and if you have a problem, you would be forced to forfit your car.

I had been hearing lately that some states are not accepting the broadway method anymore. I am not sure which ones though. I have no proof of what I read on other posts, so it could be gossip. But would need to be checked out first just in case. I believe the reason was do to tax evasion. A 30k buck car being bought for 1000 bucks looks suspicious. The tax people want there money

Why do so many people try and get around their own DOT/DMV? I don't get it. THIS is why they are there, and why you pay for them. Just use them.

You might want to check with AAA, and see if they can help you. They're light years ahead of the DMV, and my experiences with them have been very positive. I'll only deal with the DMV if I have absolutely no other choice.

Do you have any attorney friends? You need a court ordered title. A judge has to request a title be issued. I needed one once, it cost me $100.00 for the attorney, but they got me a court ordered title for the year of the car. Going the way the title office wanted to do it I would get a self assembled title and the title would have the vehicle listed as the model year the title was issued (your '69 would be listed as a 2008 Barracuda on the title). Ohio is such a fun state to deal with when it comes to titles!

I called the BMV to find out exactly what has to be done in Ohio for the title...
The nice lady explained the seller has to have or acquire the title, or if you have a bill of sale, you must get a court ordered letter from the BMV with info of the vehicle and go before a judge and state all information & condition of vehicle with pictures, and if all goes well, the judge will issue a court ordered title that you can take to your local BMV and title the car into your name.

And she said it can all be done in one day.......

That's the way it's done in ND. I've personally done it three times, on a '69 Swinger 340, a '70 Charger, and a '34 Plymouth coupe. None of them happened in one day though

There ya go. I bet if you talked to one of them they could cut all the red tape. When I did mine (if I remember correctly, it was a ways back) I had to give the attorney the VIN and what I paid for the car. A couple weeks later he gave me the paperwork to go get the title at the local title bureau. You've got me curious now. I bought a 1912 Model T Ford a few months back that the guy didn't have a title for....it's basically a pile of parts right now. maybe I'll get going and see what it will take to get a title for it. I was going to wait until I got it together and go into Michigan (that's where I bought the car) and have it inspected with my receipt from the sale. The Michigan title bureau said if I did that they could issue me a 1912 Michigan title and then I could transfer it to Ohio.
