Here's a good one for you motor guys! - 09/13/09 10:28 PM

OK 440 rebuilt a few years ago just installed, motor wont start I went threw everything! Hours have been spent on this and I found one thing that dosn't seem correct? I noticed two of the four cylinders on each side of the motor dont have the correct sequence for the opening of the intake and exhaust valves? Almost as if the incorrect cam is installed? As you know the valves quickly open Exhaust then intake then you have your pause and then again a quik bump of the exhaust then intake. Well on cylinder 1 and 3 (and the passenger side I cant remember what two cylinders)its in the order of intake then exhaust.
If your confused ask me some question and I will try to answer.

Thanks!

At least on a small block, the ports go IEEIIEEI, so if you're watching the rockers they won't match each other front to back. Two of the cylinders will be opposite the other two.

Is it just cranking and never firing?

Thanks yes I know they go (1)EI (3)IE (5)EI (7)IE
3 and 7 are ok a quick push on the exhaust then intake then the crank goes around about a turn before they hit again. 1 and 5 I get a quick hit on intake then exhaust

big and small block: E-II-EE-II-E
For the original poster's above comparison you have to figure in the firing order for the valve opening and closing sequence.

Im very confused, my thought is it doesnt matter what firing order or sequence of cylinders...Im thinking about any one cylinder going threw its four strokes and the valves opening and closing at the proper time for that one cylinder

Isnt the Hemi Cam the same sequence as the 383 and 440?

Just what is the problem??? Is it that it won't run? It won't start or fire or what?
The intake valve and exhaust valve should each open 1 time for every 2 revelutions of the crankshaft.
It is real tough (at least for me) to understand what you are getting at.
With out being there to look at it I would say that you are misinterpeting the engine sequence but I am not there to see it myself. Prime it, put the valve covers on, time it and start it.

The ports are evenly spaced, so if they are the rockers are where things get funny.... It's been 25+ years since I owned a hemi & I could well be wrong but I know the ports are evenly spaced...

I'm sittin here thinkin about how Hemi rockers are laid out & I doubt the lobes are sequenced the same from a Hemi to a wedge...

When you say evenly spaced are you saying EI EI EI EI for valve location?

What compression are you getting in all cylinders? Are you sure you haven't got the distributer installed 180* out. Happens a lot.

The valve layout on a Hemi is definitely different than a wedge. If I remember correctly they are laid out EIEIIEIE. If so, then it would seem likely you have a Hemi cam in there.

Thanks Stumpy and 440 pack for your input also, I did go threw all that Distr. and electrical stuff as I said I spent hours on this on three seperate nights. There was smoke from my brain on this one you never think your going to have half the cylinders correct and the other half incorrect.

you better reverse that for a hemi cam. the first cam lobe on a hemi is the intake, on a wedge it would be exhaust.
