Just purchased Hurst Comp Plus shifter for install... - 09/11/09 09:17 PM

I just brought a complete Hurst Competition Plus shifter and install kit for my 70 Charger R/T. It will replace the sloppy abused shift mechanism that doesnt have detents in it.

You guys who run 4speeds have any tips for improving the shift quality with one of these shifters?

I bought a new one in the spring and hated it. I had an old "sloppy" one that I welded uo the shifter rod holes and moved 'em up .300" to shorten the throw. I love it,NEVER miss a shift. sometimes sloppy is better.

moved them UP ??? Hurst LOWERED the holes to shorten the throw for the 70 B body pistol grip ???

Longer lower arm equals shorters throw on the handle, not the other way (like John said).

Yep, '70 is on the right, '68-'69 on the left.

Get a pack of Hurst clips and washers for it.I installed them in my 65 and couldnt believe how it tightened up the shifts.Rocky

Make your own rods out of 1/2" steel with teflon raced ball joints at both ends.

Call Brewers Perf. They sell Shifter Linkage Levers that will shorten the throw or make your own.

Well the new shifter I purchased from Summit Racing looks exactly like my old sloppy shifter...even has the same part#

The new one has the short levers just like my old one does which I have found out through this thread is not original to my 70 Charger RT 4speed car...so the new one must also be a reproduction of the 69 Bbody type shift mechanism

The new one does have the positive stops already on it though.
I will call Brewers to get a set of those modified shift levers as I sure would like a shorter pattern for shifting!

Forgot to mention the install kit is junk too. Best to make your own rods and keys, that way they will be stiff/not sloppy and you can adjust the ratio/throw as needed. Only expensive part is the rod ends..

What type of shifter do you have , pistol grip ? If so you need the one in the picture above with the LONGER levers to SHORTEN the throw . If you are comparing the sloppy feel to a NEW cars shifter feel , a trans with an INTERNAL SHIFT RAIL ... DON'T , you'll NEVER get that feel ...

Just last summer we had the 68 Runner Hurst
all rebuilt with new parts and got rid of the
old ball shifter and stick. The new Pistol Grip
and stick was over $225 from Hurst. After looking
all over the place for one, the guy right down the road
had the factory Hurst Pistol Grip and
stick hanging on the shop wall. For $150 we
thought it was a deal. He switched over to a V gate.
With some new arms and steel bushings in the new
pit pack, the Pistol Grip shifts super tight.
Now speed shifting is a lot more easy.

I have the pistolgrip shifter and the round ball shifter that came in the kit.

I did see the pic above of the mechanism with the longer levers....but I thought that those modified levers from Brewers would help shorten the throw?
Since I probably will not be able to find an original 70 pistol grip shifter mechanism that is in good shape...thats why I purchased the new shifter then I could just use those small levers from Brewers?

Ahhh, wouldn't say that....

My old cuda had a brandy new Comp Plus shifter box (the B body one they sell) with my own 1/2 steel shift rods with zero slop rod ends, on a ball detent side cover. I swapped out the A833 for a tremec TKO600 with the internal rail shifter (not with the keisler or other offset linkage) and was kinda disappointed. Wasn't as "solid" as the A833 setup I had on before.

The Challenger I have now has the same setup. Beautiful.

Call Brewer , he MIGHT have one of those shifter boxes , or Passon , but it won't be cheap without a core .

Well I installed the shifter and.....it seems the shift pattern is alot tighter than the other worn out one. Maybe the other shifter is just very used and worn.

I will take it out again tomorrow for a longer drive but it seems that the new shift mechanism has a very short pattern and I dont know if I want it any smaller than it is.

I test it more and see how it goes. Thanks for the input guys and will post back on how it went!

The mechanism with the longer legs is what you want for that really short throw. I have set this up for a lot of guys over the years in just about any Mopar and a bunch of Chevys and Fords too. That mech. with the 890 and 891 side levers makes for the shortest throw there is. I have a few of the mechanisms, bolt in or slip in handle if your interested, good luck.

I sold one of the Pistol Grip mechanisms a year ago on Ebay.It was like new.I think it brought 85 bucks.I kept the handle for my 65.Rocky

The tabs (operating levers) #890-891-967 are the same on all 1968-70 B-bodies. Yes, you will need the 1970 linkage rod set (LRS70B) as the reverse rod is bent to clear the speedometer cable, and the 1-2 & 3-4 rods are slightly longer on the 1970 B-body.
