How to install belt on 2004 Dodge Ram 1500? - 08/17/09 03:54 PM

I need to replace the belt on my truck. What is the procedure to remove and reinstall? Engine is the Hemi. Thanks

If it's anything like my Dakota or 3500 diesel, you'll need a breaker bar and socket to fit the idler/tensioner pulley bolt.
Pull it enough (the pully & arm it's on will move like a lever) to relieve the tension on the serpentine belt, slip it off and pull it out from around the pullies & fan. Do the opposite to reinstall. (Just have a diagragm handy of the belt routing.)

A 3/8 drive fits into the square hole in the tensioner.

Take note of the belt routing, put a ratchet or breaker bar on the tensioner and relieve the tension to get the old off/put the new on.

Oh yea! Now I remember!

The arm has the 3/8" square hole, which is better to use.
It's been a while, but I think I hooked onto the tensioner bolt last time for whatever reason.

Thanks.
