police package cars - 08/11/09 03:18 PM

What cars did chrysler offer with a police package? A guy offered me a black 2 door fury that has a 440 in it and he said it is a police interceptor. Its rusted to death and the motor is in pieces. I cant offord another car right now but it got me thinking what cars came with the police package.

Re: police package cars - 08/11/09 03:27 PM

I think the last was the diplamat. The fury was never offered to the PDs in two door versions. It might have the motor but not the whole package. And that in its self really wasn't nor is much. stiffer suspension, better charging and gauges..

Re: police package cars - 08/11/09 05:08 PM

unless it has a FURD engine it is NOT a "police interceptor" that is a ford term. MOPARS were "POLICE PURSUIT" packages and there was nothing special about them just heavyduty cooling etc...What year fury ? the early ones would have a K and the second letter of the VIN the later years there was the A38 code on the fender tag.
The early furies WERE available in a 2 door police package.

My Aunt had a Duster, I'll never forget that beast of a car. She'd take Me places and I would bury My head in My lap. (Embarrassed). Imagine that!

One day she looked at Me and said you know what? This car can outrun any car on the streets no matter how pretty they may look to you!

I was sort of like 'yeah right' she told Me (and I am not sure if this is true or not) that it had a 'police package' in it. Didn't even know what the heck she was talking about back then.

She said a cop owned it prior to her owning it and had some uhhh modifications done on the engine.

She told Me some wild stories about that car and maybe, it was her that made Me appreciate Mopars? No idea but it's quite possible looking back on it now. She proved many times that the car had plenty of 'get up and go' and nearly scared the pants off of Me a few times.

I did find this link about your query as far as police package cars are concerned.

Police Package Cars

Pop Pop (husbands grandfather) had a Fury police car. Husband says the man was dangerous in that car. He owned one of those what, ummm....Sinclair stations and was a mechanic both in the military and at home.

He would always be looking in the back seat for something or looking over there, over here, over there while driving that black wonder. Never wrecked but hubby says he was scared plenty of times.

Said that car was wicked. Wicked enough to never be wrecked. Never was either. (Don't know where it ended up so I could be wrong by now).

Re: police package cars - 08/12/09 07:47 PM

Quite a few Plymouth/Dodge cars were available with police packages over the years.

K-cars, Valiants, Aspen/Volares, A-1 series vans, station wagons, even the Chrysler Newport (in 1962).

They weren't always just big engines either, some police packages were available with /6 and 318s during the bigblock years.

Often times police packages received extra spot-welds, PS coolers, heavier alternator and wiring, different engine pieces (for durability, not performance), sometimes extra gauges, sometimes a 1st gear blockout on the shifter linkage. And the CERTIFIED speedo, of course.

A police package is just that - a whole engineed package, not just an engine. The above info is based on 2 Mopar-exclusive policecar books that I have read (some of you know those books, too )

This was my dads ex state police car in the 60's. Don't know if there was a special package on a 62 but it did have a 413 with a long ram.

Re: police package cars - 08/13/09 12:00 AM

I bought a '77 Fury Police package 4-dr. Drove it for years, it was a fantastic car. 440hp, hi-stall converter, 1st gear block, 4 pinion planitaries, trans cooler, 100amp alt., airconditioning blockout, certified 140mph speedo, hvy duty brakes, hvy duty suspension, Goodyear 6 ply Flexten radials, spotlites, hvy duty cooling package, 9-1/4 rear with 2.94 gears, and things I've forgotten about over the years.
I also couldn't leave well enough alone, I installed a MP 284 cam, 1-3/4" headers, H pipe and duel turbo mufflers, recurved the distributer, rejetted the carb. I would easily bury the needle. It rode nicer at 100+ than at 55, the speed limit at the time. I never got a ticket driving that car, they all just waved. Dave

Re: police package cars - 08/13/09 12:15 AM

Darts, Valiants, Aspens, Satellites, Furies, Belvederes were all part of the police package family & could be had with anything from /6s to 440s & a VERY FEW had Hemis. N.M. State Police even had a Superbird for a "courier car" for a short time. I was lucky enough to start my law enforcement career just as the big-block cars were getting phase out, so as a rookie I got the "old" (& BB powered ) cars to drive since they were pretty used up by then. They still ran like a scalded ape, though. The seats, while firm were so slick that a sharp turn required you to have a death grip on the steering wheel otherwise you'd slide out from under it. The odd/interesting thing with these cars is that many of the big motors had the same parts or engines as their musclecar relatives, so essentially I was getting paid to drive a musclecar 40hrs/week! When the small-block cop cars came out there was such an inconsistency in the fleet purchase, some were REAL good (like a 360 Aspen with W-2 heads & 4bbl) while others you were actually embarassed to drive. However they were equipped they were FAAAAAAR better than the current crop of police cars we're stuck using. All the manufacturers seemed to have forgotten the abuse these cars take & for the most part only upgrade the electrical & cooling systems......

Re: police package cars - 08/13/09 12:51 AM

A lot of great knowledgeable folks have given a lot of good and correct MOPAR police car information.

In some years, the slant six police cars were referred to in the Chrysler brochures as "Patrollers" vs. "Pursuits." A lot of big cities did not have to worry about high speed chases due to traffic congestion and the Patroller models with slant six engines fit their bill just fine.

Sadly, many years ago I parted a horrifically rotted out former Rhode Island State Police car. It was so rotted out that to remove the front sub-frame assembly, after removing the forward mounting bolts, all I had to do was take a sledge hammer to the rotted floor around the rear sub-frame mounts and the sub-frame dropped to the ground. The car was a '72 Plymouth Fury II with the A-38 package. It was brown with a black vinyl top and black bucket seats without a buddy seat. In my '72 part book I was able to find a listing for the seats or seat covers with a notation in the parts book stating that the seats were RI State Police Specific seats.

Re: police package cars - 08/13/09 01:53 AM

I can second the fact the seats were slick. If you didn't have your seat belt on a hard corner or curve could put you on the passenger side. I once took a 45 mph curve at 125, came into the curve on the bottom and did a 4 wheel tire screaming drift up to the shoulder on the other lane coming out. I'll NEVER try that again. Dave

and id love to hear stories from the old days. Dont knock the new Chargers though, they are a pretty dang good police car, save for the lack of room and visibility compared to a Crown Vic.

and btw the Virginia State Police used 2-door 440 Furys through 1970.

I dig driving the old troop car around, I would have loved to be a cop in the old days

My cousin had a 69 Fury Police Pursuit it came from the PA HP in McConnellsburg PA. It was a captains car or something. You only saw this car on the turnpike. That thing would flatout fly. He eventually put the engine in a 39 Dodge truck that he intended to go in from the start. I have a pic of it in the background at a family reunion in August 1972. Still had the spotlight with the Keystone on the doors painted over.

That would have been a Chrysler 9 1/4, not a Dana 60. Chrysler never put a Dana 60 in a cop car. The 9 1/4 took the place of the 8 3/4 in all automatic, big-block cop cars (and in most small-block cop cars as well) in 1974 and was used through 1981 in the R-bodies.

My first car was a wrecked 70 Belvedere RK41 car. 383 4 bbl and basically was a 4 door Roadrunner. There used to be a junk yard near here where a lot of the Virginia State cars would end up and he would sell you the drive train for a buck a cubic inch.

Re: police package cars - 08/13/09 10:46 PM

I have had 2 64 Plymouth Savoy 2dr post sedans both Indiana State Police cars. Both were 383 with single trac. I bought the first one at a Public Police auction in summer of 1966 and it was not wrecked but had a dead cylinder and drove for 25.00

My buddy & I put a junk yard $50 Imperial 440 in it and a free suregrip punkin........miss that car. The second we bought in Danville, IN in 72 and drove it home for 300.00 and did the same "tune-up" sold it to a friend and am still looking for another.......Man, those were the fun good 'ol days.......

Quite a few years ago I met a guy out at his storage place looking at some Ramcharger parts and he asked me if I was interested in his dads old 70 Fury 4 door Michigan State police car. It had a 440HP in it with the VIN indicating it to be an HP car, something like a 2.45 rear end ratio and I believe it was an 8 3/4. The speedo had a certification sticker on it,dual snorkle air cleaner and some other police items I cant remember. It was painted brown over the Blue that the State cars were here. It definately was a cool car that I didnt need then but wish I had bought now

Re: police package cars - 08/14/09 12:55 AM

After the death of the M bodies in 1989,Dodge did offer police pursuit K cars,Durangos, and Intrepids.Even Ramchargers up to 1993 were available for police/fleet/military use.

Basically,Dodge never really dropped out of the cop car scene.Just was in the background behind GM's and Phords offerings until the Charger came out in hot pursuit.
Me? I just love my 87 Dippy.

Never had a chance to drive the new Chargers. My Dept. uses Chevys now & had Fords before that. The County Sheriffs have Chargers & they are gorgeous but from what I hear they have a brake fade problem. Shades of AMC Matador cop cars! Still I'd gladly take one, outfit it with some Baer brakes, a Procharger & I'd be good to go!
