Year One Dash Harness Wired Incorrectly... - 07/30/09 09:05 PM

I have been chasing a strange elec. problem to find today that my new dash harness is wired incorrectly.
Please double check me if you can.

Symptom: Emergency flasher flashes side markers also.
With running or headlights on, side markers stay lit (do not blink) even with emergency flashers on.

I disconnected the battery & Ohm check verified a short between my emergency flasher switch pink wire,
and the black wire to the rear light harness.

This coincidentally shorts power through the headlight switch to the front marker lights,
causing the 2 park, 4 side marker, and 4 tail lights to blink.

Mike, On one of my projects, 70 Charger Daytona, I used the dash harness, 440/6 engine harness, rear body harness, lights forward harness, plus some other intermediate harnesses, that Year One offered, they're actually M&H harnesses, for the steering column, I used a NOS replacement, basically all the wiring was replaced, the only Item I had to "rewire" was the NOS Chrysler steering harness, it had a few issuses regarding correct wire placement, according to a factory service manual,.....everything pretty much "fell into place", regarding connections, and function, I had no issuses before, during, or after the car fired for the first time(5 years ago)........so I just went to the garage to see if my car dose the same as you say in your quote above,

with the car not running, lights off, just the front directionals, hood turn signal lights (optional) and rear taillights flash properly, if I leave the door open, the dome light and console light "pulse", not quite "flash",.....this is just a result of the system drawing power from units using power,

Now if I put the running lights on, more draw, the side markers "pulse" with the flashers,.....and if I turn the lights on, more drain the side markers appear to flash (heavy draw)

when I start the car, running, the sidemarkers don't flash or pulse in intentsity, with all the lights on, and flashers going,.....with flashers off, all lights are steady in brightness

I'm a little confused at the "short" you say you have,........what is the "electrical gremlin" your chasing?,......have you talked to Tom at M&H?, don't bother with YO,....have you called M&H

If I perform this light test as you did, my side markers flash also. (directionals operate normally)
I understand the pulsing you speak of.

It seems my emergency flasher output "PINK wire"
sends power to left & right directionals correctly,
but also sends power into the running light circuit (short) black wire to rear light harness.

I have not contacted M&H as I wanted to do a quick
sanity check first.

There have been 2 posts in the past two months about the harnesses not being wired right.
In your case, I'd also look at the other half of the equation, the grounds. Bad grounds can cause all sorts of funky stuff to happen, especially lights.

IIRC the 2 post were about color codeing being incorrect for 71 B body wipers harness, and E body wiper harness........I'll agreee, lack of good grounding causes all sorts of gremlins with any electrical system in the car!

So have you traced the "pink" flasher wire to see if it's fused itself(burned into) another wire, or pinched, fuseing somewhere?,....or actual joined into the harness,....are you using a Chrysler service manual for schematics?

Seems like what your describing points to the T/S switch... Or Grounds... When you ohm the harness pink 2 black connection did you remove the tail light bulbs & try again? if theres a bad ground power will back feed, but even if the ground is good when you ohm the harness your have a connection between circuts due to the bulbs..

Mike, did you rebuild/replace the steering column harness, TS/4 way cam/unit?,.....and if so what did you use?

Randy, that's interesting

.....possibility of a "shorted" bulb, feeding back into the system??????,......plausiable?,....bulbs can "short", and still work, leaving you with pulling your hair out chasing your tail?

I have heard of the shorted bulb before & will add
that to the morning to-do list.

T/S harness not messed with at all. I will also
pull the steering wheel & go through that real quick.

I have been checking GND's for the last few days
I did correct some left front park light corrosion,
but all else Ohm'ed good

I had this happen to me, It was my fault I put a 1157 bulb where a 1056 was ment to be. that messed me for weeks lol..

SOLUTION: The circuits were crossed, but not in the
dash harness where I thought....

tail light sockets

The connections in the tail light sockets were so
loose that they must have been touching each other.

The plastic block that holds the tail light & running light wires seperate has wide
slots cut into it from 1 side rather than just countersunk
holes for the mushroom connectors to sit in. I think
this allowed too much play in the wires, and since the
last 1/4" inch is bare metal some crossing was going on.
I wrapped the crimped part of the wires right up
to the mushroom and no more shorting.

All in all, i'm glad the new harnesses are wired correctly but
