Early Mopar trailer hitches - 07/19/09 09:03 PM

We were sitting around the other day talking about making a trailer for my senior dragster so I could go to local nostalgia races towing the vintagestyle dragster behind my 63 Max Wedge Dodge
The car had a hitch on it when I bought it but like an dingbat i scrapped it during the build. Does anyone know of a company who makes these hitches for vintage cars or sells NOS ones?
It would be the type one would use for a fishing boat trailer as weight total would be under #2000

Draw Tite made those back in the day. I have a used one for a Barracuda/Dart, p/n/: V-5. You drill two holes in your rear bumper on the sides of the license plate area and two holes close together in the spare tire pan. Never used it though.

Same basic setup on my parents 70 Old Vista Cruiser station wagon.

I think some of the part numbers may work for a lot of different applications. The model numbers are stamped on the tongue near the ball. Finding an old catalog would help you a bunch I think.

I also used this style hitch on A bodies. I had my dad's old one from a '71 Swinger. I was able to spread the uprights slightly (to accomodate a wider tag opening) and mounted the same hitch on a '71 Duster. I only used it for towing a 14' run-a-bout. I'd say it is a Class 1 or Class 2 hitch max, not suitable for pulling a heavy load.

But you should be able to rig a B body to safely tow a car (assuming you upgrade the brakes to more modern specs, dual master cylinder, front disc's).

My hitch says gross weight 2,000 lbs, tongue weight 200 or 300 lbs (partially covered by the ball)

You know the original brakes were adequate for 46 years for all applications including going fishing or towing a small boat which is not a bit different than towing the dragster. I do have metallic police /taxi linings. but it aint gettin discs or a dual master. The hitch had a single centre bolt on the bumper and some holes in the trunk area. I think it was an Algonquin hitch. I was hoping someone has NOS hitches or sold new ones. I can get an old one from Roblin Garage nearby but I kind of wanted new and shiny.
2000 lb hitch is 200 tonque weight.
