What was the difference in the 1969 rear package trays?

What was the difference in the 1969 rear package trays? - 06/26/09 03:34 AM

A few weeks ago I noticed that my Super Bee has the speaker holes in the package tray that were not symmetrical. I remember thinking how "odd" it was.
Then I saw phtos of some other 1969 cars where the speakers holes were the same size & direction.

Was there an option difference for this or just different production plants?

on my 69 road runner the passenger side hole is used for the air intake for the rear window defogger. i think it is turned so the blower motor will fit.

hmmmm... I have my two '69 coronets side by side out in the shop. one has rear window defoger. I'll have to look and see what configuration I have and get back with 'ya.

Great!

I figured it would have made more sense for the rear defogger to use the long skinny opening at the rear of the window directly in the center...

thelong skinny hole is used for blowing air up onto the rear window. The speaker hole is used to get the air from inside the passenger compartment,
to blow up on the window. A blower won't work if it can not get air.
I never noticed the diference before. All the ones I have seen were the asymetrical set up. Maybe that is because I live in the north where a defroster was more likely to be ordered. (?)

That's what I thought too, but I'm 99% sure that my A12 Bee never had a rear window defroster and it has the asymetrical speaker holes.
Maybe it was more of a production plant thing?

There were no options for 2 rear speakers. Most have the holes aimed differently. The Blower motor used the opening to take in air. The long skinny slot was where the air came out to defrost the rear window. Only difference in angle of slots is different plants received the trays from different vendors. You'll notice one hole is 6X9. Thats the factory rear seat speaker hole. The other is smaller maybe 5X7 thats the defroster morot location.

Hmmm...that's strange because the speaker in my (rescently sold) GTX is in the 5x7" hole and the 6x9" hole is the open one.

Dual rear speakers got 6x9 on passenger side and 5x8 on driver side, being each side the matching side on stereos setup, and front 4x10 being left channel. Acustically two smaller speakers will produce same sensation than one bigger speaker. Not perfect but close, so maybe thats the reason why two smaller speakers were used on left channel and one bigger on right channel.

you couln't get dual rear speaker with rear deffog on B bodies.

when getting rear deffog with stereo system, the 5x8 speaker on driver side was the right channel and front allways is left channel. On MONO setups with rear speaker, the speaker was located on same 5x8 hole.

Three speaker dash for AM/8Track used center speaker as one channel and each out board speaker as the other channel. The reason being you got stereo effect from each of the front seats. There were no options for dual rear speakers. They didn't offer it. One hole was for defroster motor.

there was dual rear speaker setup!!! code R32. Or do you think the 6x9 speaker size with matching screw holes was a casuality on tray ?

diff stuff is that maybe it wasn't in all years, that it could be, but is a fact there was dual rear speaker setup option, I'm sure at least since 71, an sizes were as stated.

On E and C bodies ( I think A too ) there was an adapter to fit on same passenger side 6x9 hole the blower and speaker.

---

I can't talk about the diff hole position ( horizontal or vertical ) though

Perhaps in 71 and up there was a dual rear speaker option but not in 69. There was no reason to offer it. The only thing factory that was stereo in 69 was the eight track option and that came with a three speaker dash. Again in 69 there was no dual rear speaker option. Look in any 68 69 service manuel. The rear fader switch only had a single speaker lead coming from it.

R31 Single rear speaker was the only option.

ok... interesting...

well anyway is not casuality the hole and screw locations for blower meets with regular 6x9 speakers setup, maybe to rest of bodies. Simply the blower plate was made with the speaker specs to rest of bodies and that was kept even to B bodies
