70 challenger R/T Disc Brakes Questions. Need help - 06/12/09 09:17 PM

Hi , I am looking to change the brakes on my car. Are these calipers original? If so should I keep them? Can I restore them? I cant remember , but does the left side of the car have left turning bolts and the right side right turning ? Is it same for the rear drums? thanks in advance.

The correct calipers would have KH 80012 cast into the caliper. There is also a date code stamped just above and to the left of KH 80012.

1970 = 2944712-3 = KH 80012
1971 = 3461964-5 = KH 86166

Yes those are the right calipers for a 70.

Yes in 70 the LUG NUTS & Lug Stud were right hand and left had threads depending on the side of the car. Front and back matched on each side.

It looks like you have one 70 and one 71 caliper.

Don't assume the lugnuts are still LH on the left side. They may have been switched over by now. Check the nuts first. If they are left hand thread they should have a LH stamped on the face of the nut. Mine were still left hand but when I changed to the 11.75 rotors I also switched out the rear axle studs.

oops I didn't look at both photo's

They can be restored. First you need to remove the pistons and see what the bores look like. If they are pitted or messed up then you will need to have them sleeved. There is a company that does them but I forgot who they were.

Appearance and/or function.

Appearance: Originally they were bare cast and with fresh machinging marks were there was machining. If you plan to drive it much, I'd paint them with some cast iron looking paint to preserve them.

Function: you can buy piston rebuild seal kits for them. You pop the pistons out with air, inspect the bore and piston, hone the bores, then reassemble.

Here's a pic of a cast painted calipers Troy did on his T/A. He lightly fogs the base grey with black or a darker shade of cast grey. The fine mist of darker paint gives it definition. There was a thread on this years ago. There are other members do this process too. Sorry it's big picture:
