Valve clearances- Hot or Cold - 06/12/09 11:22 AM

Hi,
Whats the concensus?
Comp cams solid in a big block stroker engine.
Cam card gives clearances, but does this mean "hot" or "cold" ?

The clearance #s they give are hot, but what I've always done is intially set them hot then wnen the engine cools down go back & measure them again... That now becomes my new "cold" valve setting... When trying to set the valves hot the engine is cooling the whole time your adjusting so the setting from one valve to the next varies & you might/probably should start the engine halfway through the process & warm it back up... It's easier to work on a nice thermally stable engine...The fact it won't burn the crap outta you doesn't hurt either..

BTW Nice 68!!

How long after shutting down a fully warmed engine does it cool enough to affect the valve settings in a negative way?

I've alwyas wondered.

I would just wait over nite, because a cold valve lash would be just that-dead cold. Chris
