charging problems with my superbee - 06/09/09 11:52 AM

1969 superbee
well I've tried new voltage regulator
and new altanator and new battery and still no luck
so here's what's happening. at idle the amp
gauge shows a little to the positive side
and the higher the RPMs the more charge
it will show it's like it's directly proportional
with the RPMs. when at idle turning on the head
lights the gauge will drop to neg 20 and when you idle up the engine it will raise back up to pos
20 and when the lights are off and you idle it up
it will almost peg. could this be the gauge?
maybe someone will know. also what voltage should
I see at the battery with the engine idled up
and all lights off? any help would be greatly
appreciated

CUDASCOTT,

This could be as simple as a bad ground connection. Check your ground wire from the battery to the block. Clean the ground wire where is connects to the block, and the surface of the block, reconnect.

If you are still using the original amp guage, I would highly recommend that you bi-pass it and use a standard volts guage. The original amp guages are known to burn up and cause electrical fires.

With your car running at about 2500 rpms, you should see anywhere from 14 to 14.5 volts. If you would like directions for bi-passing the original amp guage, let me know here and I'll post the information. Also after you have checked to see if you have 14 to 14.5 volts, turn the car off and reach your hand behind the dash and feel the back of the amp guage, if it HOT to touch, then it's time to replace it or bi-pass it.

you really need a volt meter to check where the problem is.

Check voltage at the battery, feed line to the vr, output from the vr, in to the bulkhead connector, out of the bulkhead connector.

See if it is a bad connection, or loss through something causing it.

Also replaced with new doesn't mean good.
