A-Body hydraulic Clutch conversion- what should I use?

A-Body hydraulic Clutch conversion- what should I use? - 06/02/09 11:37 PM

Looking to bypass all the z-bar, pivots, clutch rod, etc. Would like to get rid of the Clutch fork too if there is a hydraulic pilot bearing available. Not looking to spend $675 for the Keisler setup- while I like their products I think that is a crazy amount for them to be charging for the kit (sorry guys). I am a good welder and can fabricate almost anything. Looking for info. from someone that's done abudget conversion themself. Mainly what hydraulic parts to use. I'll research it all myself if I have to but don't want to reinvent the wheel if someone out there already made a good one. The Moparts crowd seems pretty sharp so I'm guessing there is someone out there that has already done a great job of this or knows where I can order a conversion kit more in line with reality (expect to pay up to 400) for the parts. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I saw a car with a home made hydraulic clutch set up. He bought a hydraulic cylinder from Grainger.
It had a piston start and travel limit adjustment. It was small and he bolted it up neatly. It pushed on the original clutch fork.
He said that there are also pull type cylinders available instead of push type. I never checked the Grainger cataloge. I'm only taking his word.

As for my Challenger, I used the McLeod hydraulic throwout bearing set up. I never had a problem with it. If you get the hydraulic throwout bearing make sure that you get the one that has the seperate fluid bleeding line. Otherwise it is very hard to get the air out.

I recently pulled an A833 OD tranny out of an '89(?) Dodge pickup with a 318. It had a factory SB bellhousing with a hydraulic set-up. That might be an easy swap.

Not sure on the 89 truck A833 setup, but the 89 truck NP435 setup teh bellhousing is for the big 143 tooth flywheel and is cast iron, monsterously huge and not a good fit for the A body.

You know, I can't remember if the bellhousing was aluminum or cast iron. I "think" it was aluminum. But it was rather bulky and set up for the large flywheel.

Try American Powertrain, they have a set-up for the 833 4 speeds that uses a universal bracket. Try this website www.americanpowertrain.com

There are a bunch of ways to do the hydraulics on the a-body. If you want to still retain the clutch fork and remain fairly inexpensive look at the wilwood items that Summit has. Another alternative is Tilton, great stuff but is a bit more pricey. There have been a few thread on the a-body hydraulics and some are quite clean installs. Check it out.
