ET Alum slotted mags ?? - 04/30/24 01:42 AM

ET made a mag that fit both the 4.5" and 4" MOPAR bolt pattern ???

Re: ET Alum slotted mags ?? - 04/30/24 02:11 AM

I had a used set of 14 x 6 aluminum ET slots on a 71 Dart years ago that was already converted to the larger bolt pattern. The washers could be flipped the other way so they would fit on a GM car with the 4.75 pattern, but that was it. Only small bolt pattern wheels I have ever see in person are direct drilled.

This site is a good reference for older wheels.

These days I think if I had an a-body with the small bolt pattern disc brakes I'd just go with the early Mustang rotor swap since it opens up the wheel choices. Only early a-body wheels that I'm aware of that you can still buy new are the Cragar SS, but those are heavy and have a reputation for growing rust ahead of schedule.

There is a guy selling a set local to me that had them on a 67 barracuda , unless the car was BBP swapped and he didn't realize it , they are as I ask. They are old MADE in USA 14 x 6.75 . I might have to check them out but I don't think a 6.75 wide wheel is going to fit in a Dart , I have a hard enough time getting and F70 on the stock 5.5 wide wheels on the rear with the rear springs sagging as they do.

Original 383 car with drums , I'm not switching it over to BBP wheels anytime soon.

Thanks ...

Are the SBP hubs smaller than the large bolt pattern ones that came later? The lug washer holes on those wheels are super close to the center caps, but perhaps the center caps are smaller too?

Mine looked like these. https://www.ebay.com/itm/355669775839

The wheels I had may have been 6.75" wide? Can't remember since it's been awhile. They fit the back with 225/60-14 tires, but it was a chore to get the wheels on and off. Had to jack the car up off the ground with a floor jack, and then use a bumper jack to raise the body of the car up a little more to get the wheels out. Once they were in place they cleared ok. The front was a little close to the fender lips since it had the large bolt pattern brakes, which makes the track width wider. Depending on what the back spacing is they may fit fine on a SBP setup since the front of the car is narrower.

I worked in a tire store in the early 70's The wheel you are refering to was an ET IV. The oval washers either had a center hole, which was used fro 4 3/4" bolt circle. Or a offset washer which could be flipped for either 4 1/2" or 5" bolt circle (big GM Pontiac, Olds, Buick). During this time I never saw any uni-lug wheels from Crager, ET, or Ansen (Sprint II) that fit the small 4" pattern. The 4" pattern was refered to as BVD ( Baracuda, Vailiant, Dart, Duster). ET IV and Ansen Sprit II were both polished slot mags. Ansen Sprint I was a brushed finish an straight lug slot mag. They were availbile in 14x6 ,7 ,8 ,10 in BVD. No 15" were available in BVD. I had them on my 68 GTS 383 convertible. 14x6 with E60x14 and 14x7 with G60 x14. Cragar Spokes were also avaiable in BVD pattern. As I remember that was about the only 2 wheels in BVD.

Yes the hubs are smaller so that one has me thrown as that would make these wheels lug centric on the small bolt pattern .

I have hubs and rotors for SBP fronts brakes that I will probably take with me to check these out , I asked the guy about the lugs he's including and he showed me pictures of them , 7/16-20 , he has a full set , it looks like whomever used these used the unilug washer and a small flat washer under the lug head , all the unilug washers I can find new on ebay are countersunk for conical washers .

I asked the guy if his car is still SBP and he said yes ... the plot thickens ... I may buy them anyway and if they won't work for me take them to carlisle in July .

Thanks Doug, if you read what I put above this he has the 7/16 lug nuts and his car is still small bolt pattern, I'm going to check them out , he's only about 20 mins from my work .

What dvw said is true.
I worked at a tire store in the late 70's, had a sbp 73 drum brake Dart back then.
Have never seen a dual-pattern Uni-lug that was 5-on-4 friendly.
Nor have I ever since owning my 69 GTS since 1984.

I have a set of 14” sbp wheels that are not unilug.

Re: ET Alum slotted mags ?? - 05/02/24 04:05 AM

I could be wrong but if memory serves me right, the offset washers could be flipped to fit two different patterns, but wasn't there also a center drilled washer that would fit yet another pattern? Even if that is so, it wouldn't cover the 4" to 4.5" and then go to the 4.75", the math just don't work, so I'm either remembering wrong or there was another common pattern back then. I only ran Mopars and Gm's, I always stayed away from the Fords.

Re: ET Alum slotted mags ?? - 05/02/24 12:15 PM

i believe there were only two washers for those wheels, the 4 1/2"-5" off set hole [flip for each pattern] and the centered 4 3/4" standard GM pattern.
the 4" pattern were all direct bolt pattern, as well as the 5 1/2" jeep, ford pickup, etc. and the 6 hole chevy truck pattern.

Above, board member "dvw" covered this topic very well concerning the center hole vs offset washers.
So, yeah, it was such a thing.

Re: ET Alum slotted mags ?? - 05/02/24 04:34 PM

Doug is correct. I too worked at Goodyear mid 70's. ET's had a plastic insert that went in the back of the rim to select bolt pattern and washers on front. It was a 1 piece circle. Cheap design. We had a drawer all them because they would wear. I have a set for chevy 4.75 bolt pattern from a set of Ansen sprint 2. They used an egg shaped metal insert in the back of rim and a center or offset washer on the front. 1 was center for 4.75 then the other insert could be installed at 4.5 or 5.

Cragar used a die cast piece o the backside of some SS wheels. Also remember ET's having a reputation for loosening. never ran them so I can't say I experienced it but thought it was worth mentioning should anybody be running a set beer

at one time, i had a pair of 15x3 wide SS wheels that came with that ring for a 4 3/4" bolt pattern. i obtained a pair of 4 1/2" rings so i could use those wheels on whatever i put those at the time.
when i sold the wheels, the buyer wanted to put them on a GM, so i gave him the 4 3/4" rings, and kept the 4 1/2" rings.
i think i still have those rings on the shelf somewhere................
at the time, around here anyone running et's with the washers had to keep close attention to get and keep the washers positioned correctly on the wheel, especially when tightening them up. many wheels were ruined because the washers were not in the wheel pocket correctly, resulting in boogering up the wheel. and yes, the tapered et lugnuts did have a tendency to work loose at times. i always checked lugnut tightness often when running those wheel types. i never had much trouble with them working loose like some guys did, but i usually torqued them to 85 ftlbs.

Sadly while I was asking the questions someone bought the wheels out from under me so I'll never know if they actually fit the 4" BP .

I seriously doubt you missed out John. I'm sure someone here would have known if they were made. I've been a A body guy since about 1973. The 4" BC has ALWAYS been a one off wheel. I had a pair of 15x 3.5's made for my 64 Dart by a shop in Ca. as there was nothing available. That would've been about 1974 or so beer
