Anyone have a source for the tall #10 acorn palnuts....

Anyone have a source for the tall #10 acorn palnuts.... - 02/07/24 04:19 PM

.....as used on '69 side marker housings, '69 GTX quarter panel emblems and so on?

None of the usual suppliers seem to have them. There are some #8s out there but I need the larger #10.

Any known sources or leads?

Do not need to be exact original-appearing just have to function and it would be nice if they look fairly close.
I thought they were being reproduced but damned if I can find anything….

TIA

I'd try Restoration Specialties and McMaster-Carr.
Not sure if Layson's or R/T Specialties (may have that name wrong) would have them.

For reference this one is from my Cuda's rear marker reflector housing. I believe they're the same and it takes a 7/16 wrench. To the best of my knowledge these are NOT available.

Megapartsusa.com has them. Set of 8 for $20 USD. I just bought a set and they appear to be a spot-on match. Paul p/n MP-SMN139

Wrong ones.

Those are for a machine thread style
They are incorrect for the ops intended use

Re: Anyone have a source for the tall #10 acorn palnuts.... - 02/11/24 01:04 PM

They came up very early in the search. They will probably snap the studs off if forced on.

Wrong size. Those are #8. I need #10.

T boomer is sending me a bag of used ones of various sizes, I'll check/maybe sacrifice one and see if I can modify the #8 versions to work,
but I'd really rather not mess around just get the right stuff to begin with.

If I can come up with a handful of good ones then I'll use those in the visible areas and switch to flat palnuts with a dab of 3m strip caulk for everything else.
It'll be functional, at least, which is the important thing.

I don't understand why this is no longer made, the car is only 55 years old wink {/sarcasm]

tom at r/t specialties is unresponsive so far.

I'm not expecting to find anything at this point.

Hard "no" from Dante who suggested tom.

Re: Anyone have a source for the tall #10 acorn palnuts.... - 03/30/24 01:40 AM

have you tried removing the #8 generic looking nut and seeing if a #10 will fit in the outside cap. there are likely a multitude of sources for the nuts
Looking at the following website shows nuts for a 5/32 stud and 3/16 stud both having a 3/8 hex.
if I'm thinking correctly a #10 usually measures about .187 or 3/16. #8 is 5/32 or about .164
So if one is able to swap the nut inside the housing 😁
LINKY
the above is just one site, I'm sure there are others

Might just get lucky wink keep us posted beer

I have a #10 that fell out because the acorn more or less rotted off.

Here’s a picture of it next to a #8 that has the right external dimension but
The wrong nut inside it. The shell is 7/16 hex, the nut inside is 3/8 hex so
Some of what’s holding it together is Forming on the edge of the “washer”.

Maybe I’m not feeling creative enough at the moment but not sure how I’d duplicate that
Without investing in tooling.

I’ve come across 2 types of #8 as well, the smaller type and the larger which is the tricky one….because it’s
the same on the exterior as the #10.

the shell hex is 7/16 ☑ The nut hex is 3/8 ☑
Referring to my earlier post, both self threading nuts have a 3/8 hex.
My thought was to obtain the #8 Acorns, remove the #8 nut and substitute the #10. With properly prepared surfaces I'd bet JB or 3M metal epoxy would hold the two together. One could even "Pre- thread" the studs so there is not as much stress as when cutting the threads.
It's not 100% correct but would likely pass most lookey loo's until the correct ones could be found . just a suggestion beer

Been there done that
If you can find the 3/8 one with the small hole you can purchase the #10 stamped nut .56 D Mech ZDC P/N B-12980 from AMK and make your own.
You'll need to take the small hole 3/8 and remove the stamped nut and replace it with the #10 nut. Not 100% correct but you won't see it in the end
