Anyone ever use a back in the day Mark Ten CDI ignition?

Anyone ever use a back in the day Mark Ten CDI ignition? - 07/27/23 06:24 PM

Had one on my '69 Road Runner back in the day in 1969 and at that time it really seemed to work and improve performance. Don't know for sure but I think the Delta Mark Ten tech was the predecessor to the MSD (Multi Spark Discharge) ignition technology?? Anyway I found an NOS Delta Mark Ten "B" (B meaning you can deactivate it if desired) and wondering if it would work with a Mopar electronic ignition system? I think before I change the GTX's OE dual point system to the Mopar electronic system I'm going to "seat of the pants" see what happens and see if I can tell any difference as I did back in the day?

will be interesting to see what happens, as will be proven by the "butt dyno". up

yes. It worked great with a mallory dual point.
Then the thing quit working on a hot day when the smoke leaked out.
It seemed to provide good spark throughout the entire rpm range even up to and beyond 7k rpm.
I bookmarked this page as I believe the plug gap or ballast played into the failure.

A predecessor to electronic ignition. They basically took the current load off the points which in turn made them last a lot longer. Doing so improved the stability of the spark. Think of it as a relay that was designed to handle the current without deteriorating.

It most likely will not give you more power if your tune-up is on point.

Every car I get gets a CD ignition in the form of an analog MSD 6AL.

Starts easier, idles better, has rev limiting and allows add-ons like 2 step and timing retard.

I've been 10.0's at 133mph with nothing more than this box and a stock OEM electronic distributor in a 3,800 lbs car. No problems with spark whatsoever.

If you are still in the stone age using a duel point anything is an upgrade. But why use "back in the day" technology when there is so much out there today that is leaps and bound better.

Ah because I have it and will cost me $0 and it's fun and kind of like old tube audio equipment, vinyl records, and turntables, If I wanted all of that "upgrade" I'd buy a modern muscle car. Just playing with back in the day stuff and no I'm not going with fuel injection either at this point. grin wink Besides I like the challenge of setting dual points, well that's a little stretch wink

Finding any good points that aren't NOS is beginning to be tedious.

Correct wink But the MARK 10 box will make them last a LONG time wink

The NOS ones, yes, the stuff they are selling new today, no, the rubbing blocks wear out quick. down

In the case of my 51 Plymouth the solution is to convert the distributor over to electronic ignition using a /6 distributor and swapping in some of the original internals to mate it up to the oil pump tang.

In the current aftermarket who makes a truly stone cold reliable High quality ignition system for the old cars nowadays? The names still exist- MSD, Accell, Mallory etc. but the quality has been atrocious for years now. I watched a clip showing the Pertronics conversion kit uses fragile wire that does not last. Pertronix has been a legend in the hobby offering affordable solid state easy to perform conversion from points.

So you still listen to music on 8 tracks?

Pertronix might have had a good rep, till they sold out and the new owners cheaped out.

Standard makes a kit, similar to Pertronix, to convert dual point distributors, actually they make kits for most of our points distributors.

YEP! My '69 GTX has an OE 8-track player so why wouldn't I ? shruggy tonguue tonguue Back in the summer of '69 I cut the back of my glovebox so I could fit an 8-track player in it so I didn't have to hang it under the dash above the console of my new '69 Road Runner and have my window broken by a thief. Should have seen the look on my girlfriend's face when she first got in and heard what she thought was the OE AM dash radio and dash speakers. If I'm not mistaken wasn't the magnetic tape used in an 8-track cassette the same type (quality) of magnetic tape used with high end reel to reel recorders back in the day?

haha

Back in the stone age I switched between an Direct Connection orange box conversion and an Accel Dual point on the 340 I transplanted into my Dad's 72 Duster twister and the BUTT DYNO said the dual point was better than the orange box ...

YMMV ...

I had a Edelbrock CD ignition back in the 70's. It would fire pugs gapped at .060 easily, fire thru fouled plugs, etc. It fired multi-spark but with shorter duration, so instead of ZP for each plug in sequence, it was [ZAP,ZAP,ZAP,ZAP...]. It made difference on my 383 Charger, and again when I swapped in the 440/4spd.

My experience was the opposite definite difference with the electronic upgrade. I resisted my mentors advice as my dual point seemed fine. But once done i was a believer. he never said I told you so up

I remember in the 1980s how thick and beefy the construction of points were from Mallory, Blue Streak, Accel and our local NAPA (Echlin). Often components from the aftermarket back then were higher quality than AC Delco, Motorcraft and Mopar.

up I have several sets of Accels for GM distributors that I bought several years back for customers cars. Various caps, rotors, V/R's coils, ballast resistors and the list goes on. I have a lot of 💩 to unload at some point frown
