While I am not one of the guys you are thinking of, I certainly have been running TQs for at least 25-30 yrs on my Mopars.

So what is it that you are trying to do?

Do yourself a favor and get a non lean burn TQ. . . .no way to make a lean burn TQ work properly - so I have found.

Good luck . . .

Cheers

Pretty sure Harms only does OE restorations. Not modifications.

There is a Thermoquad page on Facebook.

I know there is at least one rebuilder there that folks like a lot.

Well, there are a number of ways you can go about it, a lot of the approach depends on the starting point, that being the actual TQ model# you currently have.

Yes, it is easier to get there if you start with a nonLB carb, but this is doable.

Here, take a look at my complete CarterTQ library. I zipped up the whole structure of what I have in my private archive, it is about 250M in size so it'll take a while even on a fast internet connection.

You will find a boat load of info there, including diagrams of the fuel circuits, Carter Tech Guide, etc. Point being, if you want to learn you certainly will have all the information you need, and as you progress through the modifications you can track your work in a thread here.

On the other hand, if you are looking to send the carb over to someone to have it worked over, that may be a challenge today.

At first I was thinking on doing it myself but more so now looking for it to be done by someone with knowledge which I have none.

Not a fan of TQ's. They have needle valves that move and wear among other things. If you plan on using one get all the wear items replaced. Or get a Holley just my $.02

Re: Is there spmeone here that works on/repairs thermoquads - 07/08/23 06:20 PM

it took me several years and many failed attempts to finally figure out the T-quad, but now i really like them.
i pick up all the ones i can at swaps for parts or just good carbs cheap, because others don't like them, or can't figure them out. boogie
these things are not for the super high horse power engine, but work very well as a street/strip carb when set up properly.
just my old geezer life experience, failures included. your mileage will vary.

Big fan of TQ's myself, used them for 30+ years. As for the Lean Burn versions, I've made the earlier ones work with little effort. The biggest issue was no ported vacuum for the vacuum advance, which I was able to add. It's the later ones that have more electronics built in that you'll have difficulties.

The TQ on my wagon had gone to crap from sitting, and the buyer made the comment 'typical TQ' when it wouldn't run right because of it. I so wish I had taken the time to sort it before selling. frowwn

All the TQ's I ran were on stock engines, so can't tell ya' about putting one on something cammed and making real power, but for my intentions, they were great.

Ever have an old man flip you off because your car started so quick? I have. laugh2

My last 360 build was using a 238/244 @0.050" on 108 LSA hydraulic flat tappet cam...so yup, low idle vacum (7" at 850-900 RPM) on a good day lol.

Needless to say, working the airbleeds and adjusting for the low vacum is what made the whole difference between "it runs but I never know if it's loading up on fuel or starving?" to "damn, this thing is spot on everywhere!".

So to the original OP: you can post the model number of what you have, that would let us assess what configuration that is (i.e. how many of the additional emissions stuff you've got on there, fuel provisions - jetting, rods, etc.).

BTW: I'm running the aftermarket TQ, that being a 9800 carb, which is what has the electric choke and is the smaller 1-3/8" primaries carb. I wish Carter made these in the larger 1-1/2" config because the current build I am buttoning up is a 408" stroker W2 motor and that'll want more air for sure. I most likely will toss the SuperQuad on there just to try it out.

I'm curious why the guys that like Thermoquads don't migrate to the Holly Street Demon? A new design a new carburetor with all parts available. The Thermoquad is awesome and legendary but the parts and the people who can remanufacture them to like new are hard to find.

Class cars are stuck with them.

I know a few fast Ferds with TQs on them. Yes, OEM.

For me, simple reason, the TQ wail. I've had other 4 bbls, but none had the wail of the TQ... blush whistling

Re: Is there spmeone here that works on/repairs thermoquads - 07/14/23 04:23 PM

international also used these carbs on some of their engines.
back when i was working, i wrote a couple of programs to make jets and metering rods on a harding CNC lathe. at that time, those machines were run by mylar tape. laugh2
the metering rods required a secondary bending step, so they were made a little long, then trimmed to the correct length at the top after bending.
i have also collected many T-Quads [in all type of conditions] for parts, especially if they were cheap or free.
most of the bowls are good, despite the claim they warped or cracked. mostly the fuel wells on the bottom just needed resealing with a good quality fuel proof epoxy. just don't go overboard using the epoxy, else the wells will need trimming at the seam to fit the base.
