Price for ATF+4

Price for ATF+4 - 10/19/22 11:41 PM

Really? Almost everywhere I go it's around $11/qt, ridiculous.
No Matter what brand. I did a fluid and filter on my Durango last week, a 46re.
Right now I'm doing the same on my 12 ram 1500 with it's 65 RFE (whatever that stands for story for later).
I looked on my phone last week and thought maybe I had a deal (still more than I paid last time which was $4 something at Walmart) at $6.something came up at the local Napa but when I called to verify stock he only had like 3 quarts, had been trying to get stock replanished from the warehouse but they have had none to send him for a while now I guess, the 3 quarts he had were $11.something. even though it came up on my phone "there" for$6.99 per.
Even Walmart comes up on my phone at $11/qt. Is there some sort of monopoly on ATF+4?
I did find some at the farm and fleet my wife works at for 7.69 but even that's a far cry from $4.something.
I've always used the +4 since it has come out but why can everyone else have a "universal" fluid that claims good for any other make than a Chrysler product?

Last winter I paid $8 a quart for AFT+4 locally. $11/a quart doesn't surprise me these days, better buy it now, next month $11 might be cheap. My 4x4 46RE holds 9 quarts. priced out pan gaskets and filters lately? If not, get ready!

I recall paying $8-9$ a quart when replacing fluid in my neon. If you think $11 a quart is insane, be greatful you don't have a ZF in any of your rides. Non serviceable filter unless you buy the Dorman pan ($250.00 avg from my searches), mopar fluid runs an astronomical $40 avg PER QUART.

I've seen some ZF fluids at near $100/qt and that was before all the poop hit the fan, probably $150/qt now.

I’d go to the dealer with some gallon jugs and buy bulk.

Re: Price for ATF+4 - 10/20/22 01:15 PM

I just serviced the trans in my '01 earlier this week. The best I could find (didn't look too awful hard) was $32 for a gallon jug at Advance Auto ($8 per qt). I used to rant when it was $4 per quart...not very long ago.

Re: Price for ATF+4 - 10/21/22 04:17 PM

But ATF+4 is so awesome and should be used in everything because Chrysler back-spec'd it, right?

Anyone really think they tested it on a 1957 Powerflite?
Also Were you born yesterday? LOL

Remember when there were two kinds of ATF and one kind of antifreeze?

Now there are about 127 different kinds

And it's all to provide a superior product.....profit margins NEVER EVER entered anyone's mind.

That's also why there are so many different wheel bolt patterns....sometimes only .3 MM different from each other too.....sometimes on the same model one year apart....because .3MM spread between the lug nuts means the difference between life or death!
114MM has proven to kill everybody but with 114.3 you'll live forever. Safety!
It has nothing to do with profit! Cross my heart and swear on a bible or whatever!
I can't think of any politicians to blame for the wheel bolt pattern thing but there must be somebody....

Re: Price for ATF+4 - 10/21/22 06:28 PM

dad was a mopar mechanic for about 25 of his 47 yrs turning wrenches. it was drilled into the guys heads that went to the training centers for classes that plus 4 was for the ill-fated 604 and for the rh/re trans, as it had the additives mother mopar wanted. does he still do that? no. he used plus 4 in rh/re tans and dex/merc 3 in everything else. hell, he even adds 1 qt of 30 wt oil to his race trans because and old ss racer told him that it helps.

Re: Price for ATF+4 - 10/21/22 10:28 PM

I used +4 in my race car, in my diesel and in my NV4500. It's a synthetic, you could run Amsoil but I think it is even more expensive. +4 is good stuff, stands up to high heat and lasts a long time, why you all poo poo it is beyond me.

Yeah this thing takes 2 filters, of which the car parts stores couldn't decide if what they had would or wouldn't fit my truck so I went to the stealership and paid $80 for the pair. I was quite surprised at that as well. Yikes.

They do the same thing at grocery stores now too. It used to be cheaper to buy the larger sizes, now sometimes it's cheaper to buy two smaller ones.

Re: Price for ATF+4 - 10/22/22 12:35 PM

Were the first on the market ink jet printer cartridges more expensive than the “typewriter” and dot-matrix ink ribbons?
No
What happened soon?

What did a jury in Hillsborough NC later rule?

Crazy.....

ATF+4 was a little bit more than ATF+3 when it came out.

I have posted the SAE paper with the nitty gritty of ATF+4 versus the previous +3 and against GM, Ford, etc.

“We are not hunting enough Sperm Whales today so there is a shortage of naturally good but cheap ATF base stock oil.”

If you think the above sentence a joke or nonsense you need to learn more amusing history..

Why was the stuff in “Lubegard Red Bottle” invented
and what government provided grant money?

I wish we had a retired Lubrizol employee who could tell us whether just “super filtering” used ATF+4 would allow re-use for so many additional miles or hours.

Some parts of ATF+4 may be made originally from methane in natural gas in a “synthetic process of chemical steps”.
Bulk natural gas prices are up 3x to 4x by US region, and even higher in Europe.
That is the only reason I can think of based on “free market forces”.

Buying a gallon vs quarts of ATF, or any oil, brings the per quart price way down.

If you use it, better buy it. Whatever it costs now will sound like a bargain 6 months or a year from now. That goes for everything.

You apparently didn't notice those Amazon prices

$9.18 qt
$51.41 gal

4 qt in a gallon
4 x $9.18 = $36.72

In this case 4 quarts are way cheaper than a gallon.

Valvoline ATF+4 in my store. 13.99/qt. 30.99/gal. Walk in. Fram is 10.99/qt. Not available in gallons, If it's not on special, sometimes I can do a little better.

I don't even look at Amazon.

Re: Price for ATF+4 - 10/23/22 11:01 AM

I wonder if one of the big 18 wheel trucking companies like JB Hunt has data on which ATF performs best on the road, as many have gone to automatic transmissions to attract more drivers to the profession.

Data-centric Amazon might be looking at this in their delivery van fleet, as well as Fed Ex, UPS, Postal Service.

What are Cummins Ram auto trans rebuilders telling customers concerning ATF?

Semi trucks "automatic" transmissions are not true automatic transmissions, they are automated manual transmissions, I am not sure what they use as fluid, tried googling it and couldn't find anything...

Re: Price for ATF+4 - 10/23/22 04:35 PM

my newest vehicle is my 99 caravan ["the bus"], and although it's 604 transmission/transaxle calls for something else, [a mopar fluid/atf - +3 maybe ?] i have been using cheap, multipurpose dexron atf in it for years and many miles, with no problems whatsoever.
for what it's worth, it also has a Trans-Go shift kit in it. of course i don't drive this thing like i stole it, but at times, it does see truck duty by hauling engines and transmissions.
i just don't know any more. some say +4 is the way to go, i have used other stuff without problems.
i guess i'm just old and confused.............. biggrin

If anyone wants to price compare, check out Summit Racing for Valvoline ATF+4 in the gallon containers. scope Not sure if being a Pro Shop member provides any discounts on these particular items because it does vary. work The one gallon container ends up at $7.50/qt. and the one gallon 3-pack ends up at $6.75/qt. I got a one gallon 3-pack and a filter for my 2005 Dakota resulting in free shipping (Over $99.)! up I have a 2004.5 Cummins dually too but have used Type F or Amsoil Multi-Vehicle synthetic in the race cars. They do charge tax and items are shipped from the vendor.

Re: Price for ATF+4 - 10/26/22 07:35 PM

I just checked, my dealership gets 12.85 a QT for MoPar +4.

It is a little cheaper by the gallon, but our gallon jugs are more like 1.3 gallons to complicate everything....
