I was priming the oil pump in my 528 and noticed oil gushing past the lifters in their bores. How much is ok and how much is to much?

If the machined mid section of the lifter is coming out past the lifter bore you could have the wrong lifters. Post a picture.

When you say picture are saying take the lifter out for a picture?

With a lifter on its base circle (lowest point in its travel) see if the center band of the lifter is exposed below the lifter bore. If so that’s likely where your problem is.

Is this a stock unbushed lifter bore block?
If so all the stock blocks I've prime with the lifter valley cover off, regardless of which type lifters in them, leak a lot of oil around every lifter out the top and bottom.
I've had similar issues with solid roller lifters that leak a lot MORE oil out at max lift that affected the oil pressure, that block was an early 1966 Street Hemi block that the driver side lifters leak some at max lift and the passenger side galley didn't shock shruggy work
I plugged the left lifter oil galley off with a small welch plug behind the oil galley plug to fix it and later had to add another plug behind it when the oil pressure and maybe motor heat allowed it to move forward and start leaking a little more. That motor held 75 Lb. oil pressure running but t would pulse the oil pressure at idle around 5.0 lbs. between 80 and 75 lbs.: work: confused

This is a bushed alum block. I just put a new roller cam and solid bushing roller lifters in. I was finishing up with the prime.

Aluimnum grows when heated which makes me think it will leak less around the ilfter warm and hot up
I'm sure your lifters aren't causing the leaks around the roller wheels at the bottom of the bodies like a stock unbushed block can twocents work

Holes get bigger when the material they are in warms up. So odds are they would leak more when warmed up.

A bushed block and you have oil leaking past the lifters? I take it the bushings have been drilled ?

Yes, they are drilled. I just checked and the top of the lifter is just barely below the top of the bore when the lifter is all the way on its down stroke. What I'm wondering is, how much bypass is to much?

I lied, I rechecked and when the lifters are at the top of their stoke they are just below the top of the bushing.

I'm thinking when they grow,the block, it will expand and the lifter holes will get smaller in diameter, not larger work
I'll try and remember to test my new aluminum KB wedge block with some heat in the lifter valley to find out if they shrink or get larger in diameter confused: work:

I'm thinking the block also grows more in height when warmed up more than the steel cylinder sleeves do also raising the heads up also so maybe I should make the piston deck height higher to compensate for the block deck height increase when hot work shruggy

To much would be if it effects oil PSI, something you don't want to find out later after the eng.is assembled but how else would you really know unless the lifter bores are out of spec.

It seems kinda subjective to me, other than what is your lifter to bore clearance? How much PSI are you getting when priming? I find it hard to believe that bushed lifters would have excessive clearance and find it even harder to believe bushed lifter bores would be exposing the oil band shruggy could you post a video?

FWIW my 440 seems to leak a “lot” but it made at least 45 psi on the engine stand. It only makes 15 or so psi at hot idle shruggy Shop that built the short block attribute the low oil pressure to loose bearing clearance. I think leakage around the lifters is part of it also. I did restrict oil to the drivers side lifter galley (solid roller)

Agreed that some photos/video would help.

Surprised to hear it's a gusher with bushed bores. I'm running solid roller in an unbushed block. .0015 clearance and oil leakage around the lifter during priming seemed minimal to me but I guess that is subjective. No restrictors and pushrod oiling.

1100 rpm idle was 49psi with 20-50 and now 41psi with 5-30

Ok, I tried to up load the video, but it wouldn't accept the post and I don't know why, that stuff is over my head. So, I talked to Cab a good while about this and this is the up date. I installed a direct gauge and priming with not a battery drill, but a corded 3/8 drill I get 78 psi and when I hand turn the crank to where the rockers start oiling, it will drop 4/5 psi. So, this is all I have to go on without being able to show the video. We think it might be ok, but I won't know till I start it up and get it warm.
