Factory steel rim questions

Factory steel rim questions - 04/15/09 02:44 AM

went to a salvage yard today to look for 6" steelies for my Coronet. Are these things rare or what? I looked through hundreds of rims, but I was able to find two of them. I also found four 6.5" and several 5.5" rims. All 15inch that accept the smaller dog dish hubcap. I'll be going back in a few weeks and was wondering if there's any other Chrysler steel rims I should look for? THis guy has had this junk yard for 50+ years. Price for the rims are a steep $3 a piece

If you find any 15X7s with a part number that ends in 450, I will pay you $9.00 each plus shipping.

If you find 15x7's with part number 2944450, I'll pay good $ for them. If you find 69 rims 15x6 with H stamped in center by lug nuts, let me know. They will have a 60 stamped where the pentastar is stamped on most later rims.

Yea, I bet you would!

The last set of 4 "450" wheels I sold went for over 3K, and they went even higher after that.

The 66-67 14 x 5.5 wheels are hard to find as well, used on 66-67 Hemi cars as well as some other applications, some other big block cars and Station wagons.

They made 3 versions that I've seen so far, all used the large hub cap (pre-1968 style). They were all 5.5" wide but otherwise looked just like a typical 14 x 5.0 wheel.

The most common version had a "5" stamped on both sides of the valve stem and sometimes had 5.5 stamped into one of the raised bumps around the lug nut holes, no other distinguishing stampings. Another version (late 67) had a month & day stamp on either side of the valve stem and a 5.5 stamped off to one side by itself, these also often had the date stamped into the center on one of the raised lug nut pads, this style was the only one of the bunch that had a date code.

1966 Wheels looked identical to the 67's but had an extra hole drilled between each lug not hole (not quite large enough to accept a wheel stud). Some say they have found these wheels on early build 67 cars although I never have. With the hub caps in place you can't see any differences.

Pics to follow are of the 67 style, the black ones are undated, the yellow ones are all dated March 31, 1967.

Here I've photoshopped the 67 wheel to look like a 66 wheel for an example

Don't be fooled by immitations! There were some other 14 x 5.5 wheels but they were not hemi wheels! These examples were being sold on ebay as "66 Hemi Wheels" but they are not, notice the little "eyebrow" shapes in the rim? Those are to retain some sort of wheel cover, Hemi wheels did not have these.

Another of the "Wrong" wheels, the centers look different as well but it is subtle.

Look for steelies from '67 and earlier half ton pickups, vans and some '67 and earlier wagons with the tow package. These are 15x5K or 15x5.5K. This info is stamped between the beads, if the tire isn't mounted. These wheels take the large cap and, like Scott's picture shows, doesn't have provisions for wheel covers. I'll pay up to $25/wheel if they're not too rusty. Slightly bent is OK, I just want the centers from them. I'll post a pic of what I want later so you can print it out and take it with you.

I like to have the right parts as much as the next guy, and the "450's" are right for my car, but I draw the line in the sand well before paying $3k for a set of steel wheels......I'll just have to make do with my 15" x 7" steely repops from wheel vintiques I guess.

Cheers,
Dave

thanks for all who have replied so far. I did find a few 6.5" with the "H" stamped in them. I doubt I'll find any Hemi wheels since, from what I hear, there wasn't any Hemi cars around where I live. But they're worth looking for.

Real 69 15x6 H wheels are worth $500 each if they are nice, a date code matching set can bring $3-4000 or more if its a desirable date code. You are a true samaritan offering $100 for these wheels.

The 6.5 wheels with an H are later wheels, I get them at the local pic-a-part for $12 with a good tire

As far as I know, all 14 x 5.5" "Hemi" wheels had the eyebrows around the valve stem.

These raised crimp marks are visible in the picture of the black wheel posted, if you look closely.

Hemi wheels did not have 5 evenly spaced eyebrows around the circumference of the rim, however. I have seen other early 14 x 5.5" wheels with this feature.

Another tip-off is the backspacing. The rim shell protrudes a little from the wheel center on real, 14" Hemi wheels. The edge of the center is flush with the rim shell on other (probably pre '66) 14 x 5.5" wheels.

Cass I have to dissagree with you on the eyebrows, those two sets I pictured are the real deal and I still have them, absalutely no eyebrows, I can post close ups if you like. I also have a pair of the pre-66 wheels (no street Hemi's then but they were on wagons (and possibly race Hemi cars?) They look very similar to 66 wheels but have a larger font "5" than the 66/67 wheels on either side of the valve stem.

What do these go for ?
