Services a 99k 2014 Ram 1500 crew cab might need? - 06/05/22 09:56 AM

Hi all,

my wife spied a 2104 Ram 1500 crew cab 4x4 with 5.7L and 8HP70 transmission for sale near us and asked me to look at it. It was ordered with a lot of options (limited slip, 32 gallon fuel tank, tow package, etc). The ODO reads a little over 99K miles.

TBH, I think it looks pretty good, and for the price it's newer, has fewer miles than any other Ram pick-up for sale within 50 miles of where we live.We did a test drive and it seemed fine.

He's had the exhaust manifolds done twice, most recently about 8 months ago, and supposedly he's done oil and filter changes himself, using synthetic oil. He's also added airbags at the rear, Rancho adjustable shocks, but still has the OEM shocks that he had taken off when he bought the truck when it had around 1k miles.

So what things might need maintenance/servicing considering the age and mileage? shruggy

Were it mine, I'd start from scratch, assuming you're not getting the maintenance records with it. Replace all fluids and filters including diffs, transfer case, transmission fluid / filter. Thereafter follow the maintenance schedule starting at mile zero.

Trans fluid change supplies, says BMW, used same on my 13 300 and 15 Durango linky

I have a 2014 Ram 1500 5.7 with 90,000 miles and I replaced the ex manifold on one side. I think I will need to replace the other one shortly too. Other than that it has been a good truck. Spark plugs are almost due at 100,000 so i will be doing them soon. My cruise control button won`t work at times but if I smack the back of the steering wheel with my hand it will work again for a while. I replaced the pcv a couple times for maintenance and one of the sensors (IIRC I think it was the crank sensor) went bad and i replaced it. Check the rubber exhaust hangers if you live in the salt belt. I had to replace two of them. The e brake levers at the rear axle were rusted and I needed to clean them and lube. No other issues that I can think of. I change my oil at 4,000 miles with 5w20 pennzoil ultra and 5w30 in the summer. I have cleaned my throttle body a few times also. I am happy with it.

Didn;t those year Rams have issues with front suspension parts wearing out? Or am I recalling a different year Ram?

This here.... ALL fluids and filters. Replace the plugs and serp belt, lubricate the brake components that need lubed to slide freely. The transmission will probably need more than 6 quarts, so the link above is a great deal if you can add a few quarts to it(mopar wants $50 a quart for the fluid, and $300 for the pan kit, the filter is not a serviceable item) that being said, having the trans serviced at a dealer last time I checked was almost $900. If you choose to flush and fill the brake system, you will need access to a handheld/laptop that can actuate the abs to completely do the job.

I bought my 2012 last august with 96k miles on it.
The ONLY thing I've done is a trans solenoid pack for #3 shift solenoid 2 months ago . And I used a new mopar parts via ebay . Otherwise nuttin but oil changes . ( knocks on wood )

I just took it on a trip back east and easily got upper teens for mileage.

I paid $19,9 for mine

Not the same year but I bought my 04 with a lot more miles then that and other then changing the fluids probably the biggest repair it's had is probably replacing the oil pan because of rust and the muffler and tail pipe for the same reason.

It all depends on how it was maintained but every time i buy a used vehicle like that I expect to spend 600-700 or so on fixing stuff almost right away. Sometimes they need work sometimes they don't need anything.

Back in 2017 I bought a 2013 1500 Longhorn with almost 100k miles on it, dealer had already done brakes, spark plugs and one side exhaust studs. Part of the deal was them to do oil change before I picked it up. Once home, I had diff, xfer case and trans fluids changed. Was great truck. I wasn't happy with how "hot" it would run (told it was normal . . . ), but never any issues.

Think with any used vehicle, set aside $1k for the first year of ownership - never know what can pop up on you . . . sounds like you found nice rig. Good luck

Cheers

Like the others, when I buy a used vehicle I drive it home and it goes straight into the shop. I go over everything, belts, hoses, brakes, suspension, exhaust, fuel system, fluids, filters, tires etc. I call it a getting acquainted period to prevent getting stuck on the side of the road wink twocents beer

I thank you all, I was thinking the same thing. up
The owner just let me know he paid for tags and will get smog done asap. Hopefully we'll get approved for a small loan to add to the cash wife has accumulated. whistling

It's ours! My wife and I got to sign docs, truck is registered, smogged and cracked windshield replaced.
I took a picture of the now former owner at the open passenger door talking to my wife and son.
I got to driver back home and drop off Anthony at his home while my wife and son got to deliver eggs and chicken to friend.

Time to look into maintenance and then hit the road Sunday to SoCal. drive
